Altenbamberg brings together distinct travel interests: the ruins of Altenbaumburg Castle on a ridge, hiking trails and winegrowing in the Nahe region, as well as historic sites in the village. In Bad Kreuznach, the bridge houses were built from 1480 onward due to a lack of space.

Altenbaumburg Castle and the Landscape

Altenbaumburg Castle is the ancestral castle of the Counts of Raugrave and one of the largest castle ruins in the Palatinate. The ruins stand on a ridge above Altenbamberg as a spur castle. The site measures 200 metres long and 40 metres wide—five times as long as it is wide. It is divided into upper, middle and lower castles, which date from different construction periods. Treunenfels is the former outer bailey of Altenbaumburg Castle and stands among vineyards.

Hiking and Access

Altenbaumburg Castle can be reached on foot via hiking trails from Bad MĂĽnster am Stein-Ebernburg and Bad Kreuznach. The Altenbaumburg Trail is an 8.4-kilometre hiking route to the castle ruins; it passes through the forests of Bad Kreuznach, Ebernburg and Frei-Laubersheim. In the village centre, access is via BurgstraĂźe. Altenbamberg also has a network of hiking trails with a barbecue area and a shelter in a wooded setting. Check current access conditions before setting out.

The information differs when choosing a hike: the Altenbaumburg Trail specifies the route length and forest sections, while the local hiking network highlights its barbecue area and shelter. This can help you decide whether the measured route or the facilities along the trail network matter more for your plans.

Church and Jewish History

The Catholic church was built in 1783 and is dedicated to Mary and Saint Maurice. It houses a Trombach Madonna from the former Trombach Monastery. Jewish heritage sites include two cemeteries with different periods of use: the old Jewish cemetery “Am Narrenbrunnen” was used from 1750 to 1890, and the new Jewish cemetery from 1873 to 1937. The periods overlap from 1873 to 1890, so they did not follow one another in full. The new cemetery is within the municipal cemetery grounds but is separated from the Christian cemetery. Altenbamberg Synagogue was built in 1892 and destroyed in 1938, leaving only remnants of its walls.

Vineyards and Winery

Rotenberg in Altenbamberg is classified as a VDP.GROSSE LAGE in the Nahe wine region. This classification may be updated; if it is important for your wine plans, check the current status. Steigerhof Winery is located at the edge of the village on a hill at the start of the Alsenztal, also in the Nahe winegrowing region. Rotenberg refers to the classification of a vineyard site, while Steigerhof refers to the location of a winery. Visiting arrangements at the winery may change; check the current options before planning a visit.
