A late Baroque church with Romanesque elements, archaeological traces from several periods, and former mills give Wahlheim its cultural and historical character. There are also wine tastings by appointment and guided vineyard walks in summer. The range of experiences extends from architectural and local history to specific offerings related to viticulture.
Church, Archaeology and Art History
The Evangelical Church at Obergasse 46 is a late Baroque hall church dating from 1750. Its building history spans several periods: the nave contains Romanesque elements, and the former choir was renovated in the 15th century. The 1750 building was erected on the site of a chapel dedicated to Saint Martin.
Archaeological traces also point to different periods. In 1939, the grave of a Frankish woman with rich grave goods from the Merovingian period was discovered beside the church. Finds from the Celtic period have also been made in Wahlheim, and the remains of a Roman villa have been identified. Much of the archaeological material from Wahlheim is on display at the Museum of the City of Alzey; check the current exhibition before visiting.
Wahlheim was also the birthplace of Jakob Wick (1834–1912), a landscape, portrait and history painter. The combination of the building, archaeological discoveries and the artist’s biography offers different ways to explore local history, which is not limited to a single period.
Former Mills and Their Architectural Forms
Several mills once operated along the Weidasserbach, including a hereditary mill belonging to the Teutonic Order. Wahlheim’s individual mill sites include the former Ohligmühle at Mühlstraße 3, the former Schleifmühle at Mühlstraße 45, and the former Kellermühle at Obergasse 125/129.
A mill channel survives at the Ohligmühle, along with the remains of an iron waterwheel and parts of the technical equipment. The Schleifmühle is a four-sided mill complex dating from the 19th century; its large mill building dates from before 1885. The Kellermühle is a four-wing complex from the 18th or 19th century with a Baroque mansard-roofed house. Comparing the examples, the Ohligmühle is notable for its mill channel and surviving technical features, while the Schleifmühle and Kellermühle stand out for their architectural forms and details.
Winegrowing and Wine Experiences
The Wahlheimer Schelmen vineyard site covers 53 hectares, faces southeast and lies at an elevation of 230 to 275 metres. Its soils include loess/Pararendzina and limestone/Rendzina.
Weingut Burkhard offers wine tastings in its tasting room by appointment. In summer, guided walks through the vineyards include wine tastings at several stops; regional snacks are served at selected locations. The formats differ: the wine tasting takes place at one location by appointment, while the walk is a seasonal offering with several stops. Arrange your wine tasting in advance and check the availability and details of the summer walk.
Cycling Routes and Rail Connection
For cyclists, two different connections are worth noting: themed cycling routes in Kettenheim can be reached by rail via neighbouring Wahlheim; a cycling route to Wahlheim follows the Weidasser Bach away from the main road. Check rail connections and current route information before travelling.
