Saulheim combines viticulture and historic village scenery with opportunities for cycling and spending time in a floodplain landscape. In 2025, the village ranked tenth among Rheinhessen’s major wine-growing communities; the total vineyard area was 545 hectares. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose different focuses: a tour through the vineyards, a wine tasting, local history or trails through the Mühlbach floodplain. Not every topic needs to fit into the same day.

Vineyards, Views and Wine Tastings

The Hiwweltour Saulheimer Hölle trail runs through the Saulheim vineyard sites of Hölle and Schlossberg. The route offers panoramic views towards the Donnersberg, Soonwald, Rheingau, Feldberg and Odenwald. In this way, the tour combines a walk through the vineyards with views across a broad surrounding area. It offers a specific starting point if vineyards and panoramas are to shape your outing.

There are various options for wine tastings. Weingut Kösterhof offers personal wine tastings and vineyard walks by prior arrangement. At Weingut Mario und Lydia Dechent, wine tastings take place in the vinotheque; there is also a historic vaulted cellar. The options mentioned therefore differ: at Kösterhof, a tasting and a walk can be combined, while the tasting at Dechent takes place in the vinotheque. The vaulted cellar is another historic feature of the winery, not the stated location for the tasting.

Local History and Historic Buildings

The Römer stands in the village centre of Nieder-Saulheim, surrounded by the historic town hall and two neo-Gothic churches. The town hall has a stair tower, a spiral staircase and a Renaissance roof. The furnishings of Saulheim’s second Protestant church also bring together different periods: the Gothic baptismal font dates from the 13th century, the Gothic pulpit from the 15th century and the Rococo organ from 1728.

Local history tours cover historic Nieder-Saulheim and the mill heritage along the Saulheimer Bach. They are also available in English and French. The local history museum is housed in a former manor house and features 19th-century interiors as well as traditional crafts: cooperage, shoemaking and weaving. If you plan to visit the museum, check visitor access in advance.

Mühlbach Floodplain and Cycling Tours

Between Saulheim’s two historic village centres lies the renaturalised Mühlbach floodplain, a park and floodplain landscape with waterways and diverse fauna and flora. It includes paths, seating and viewpoints, as well as opportunities for wildlife watching and a boules court. This makes it possible to combine an interest in nature and the landscape with a different focus from a walk around the village centres or a wine tasting.

The circular cycling routes start in Saulheim and follow paved farm and cycle paths with no motorised traffic. The routes also include climbs, distant views, places to rest and opportunities to stop for refreshments. Paved paths here therefore do not automatically mean flat routes. These features can help you decide whether a cycling tour suits your plans for the day, without assuming a specific journey time.

Planning Your Stay in Saulheim

If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Saulheim, you can first consider what you would like to focus on during your time here: wine tastings and vineyard walks, historic buildings and local history tours, cycling tours or the Mühlbach floodplain. At Weingut Kösterhof, an advance arrangement is required; for a museum visit, access should be checked. You can take both conditions into account when planning your day without trying to fit the other options into the same schedule.
