Gundheim lies in the Wonnegau, amid a landscape of vineyards, orchards and fertile farmland. The local history museum in the historic Pfalzhof adds insights into cultural and everyday history to the landscape experience. There are other points of interest in the town centre, too: a quiet corner with a modern fountain and an old wine press, as well as the St. Nepomuk statue, a feature of the town’s cultural heritage.

Wine Country and Local History

The region’s winegrowing has traditionally been associated with Roman times. Vineyards stand alongside orchards and fertile farmland, so the landscape extends beyond winegrowing. In the local history museum, tools on display also present winegrowing as part of working life. The landscape and collection offer different perspectives: the agricultural surroundings on the one hand, and the specific work of winegrowing on the other.

Local History Museum in the Pfalzhof

Gundheim’s local history museum showcases domestic life, traditional occupations and schooling; exhibits on winegrowing tools are also included. Anyone interested in everyday history can explore household life, learning and work side by side here. The museum can be visited by prior appointment only. Guided tours of its rooms may be available. Arrange your visit in advance and confirm availability. You can find the local history museum at Hauptstraße 19 in Gundheim.

Features in the Town Centre

The quiet corner combines a modern fountain with an old wine press. The contrast between modern design and historic equipment brings together different eras; the press also makes a visible connection to winegrowing. The St. Nepomuk statue is another prominent feature of Gundheim’s cultural heritage.

More to Explore in the Wider Alzey-Worms Destination

In the wider Alzey-Worms destination, the Alzey City Museum offers a different cultural and historical perspective. Its prehistoric and early history exhibition traces the development of central Rheinhessen from the Neolithic Age through the Bronze, Iron and Roman Ages to the Merovingian period, documenting more than 6,000 years. Another exhibition is devoted to the geology and palaeontology of the Mainz Basin: its development over millions of years can be traced through minerals, particularly fossils. Alzey thus offers a distinct comparison between cultural and historical periods and geological developments.

The Petersberg between Gau-Odernheim and Bechtolsheim is another landscape highlight. This 246-metre-high, vine-covered hill offers expansive views across the Wonnegau and the surrounding hill country.

In and around Flonheim, you can find white trulli—small buildings associated with vineyards that were built by migrant workers from Lombardy. The Alzey Art & Culture Trail runs through the vineyards and includes 20 works of art and 22 vineyard huts. In the wider destination, visitors can therefore choose cultural attractions set in the vineyard landscape as well as exhibitions.
