High-altitude trails through coniferous and deciduous forests, the Botanical Trail between Katzwinkel and Mühlenthal, and the mining history of the “Vereinigung” mine shape Katzwinkel’s natural and cultural attractions. For a stay, hiking and local history are therefore distinct themes to explore.

Hiking trails and landscape

Katzwinkel offers hiking trails along ridges through extensive coniferous and deciduous forests. Some trails connect to the long-distance Natursteig Sieg hiking trail. The ridges and forests describe the landscape of the local trails, while the connection of some trails links them to the wider hiking network. When planning a hike, you can consider the landscape and trail connections as separate points of reference.

The Botanical Trail runs between Katzwinkel and MĂĽhlenthal. In this area, it connects to the Natursteig Sieg (Stage 10) as Tour 3 and is used by hikers and nature enthusiasts. Its route is characterized by lovely meadow paths, splendid panoramic views and idyllic stream valleys. The tour number and stage place the trail within the network; the landscape features describe what the route is like.

The two hiking options offer different points of reference: the local trails focus on ridges and forests. The Botanical Trail, by contrast, combines a named tour, a connection to a specific stage and distinctive landscape features. When comparing routes, you can therefore distinguish the general hiking surroundings from a more precisely identified trail.

Mining history in the open air

The Katzwinkel show mine installation commemorates the 127-year mining tradition of the “Vereinigung” mine, which closed in 1963. The site features a mock stone mine entrance, an old headframe, restored mine carts and a mine railway. As a symbolic outdoor installation, it introduces visitors to mining history with the help of information panels.

The length of the mining tradition and the year of closure provide a timeline; the installation complements it with visible features and explanations. This lets you encounter mining history both as a historical development and through its symbolic outdoor representation.

Church history

In 1949, an emergency church was established in Katzwinkel in an existing barracks on the grounds of the “Vereinigung” mine. The foundation stone of the St. Barbara branch church was laid on 12 July 1959; the ceremonial dedication took place on 11 December 1960. The dates record different events: the establishment of the emergency church and, for St. Barbara, the laying of the foundation stone and the dedication. The emergency church’s location at the mine connects this aspect of church history with the mining site.

If you are choosing between a hiking focus and a historical focus for your stay, the Botanical Trail and the show mine installation offer different points of reference: landscape and network connections on the one hand, mining tradition and its symbolic representation on the other. The church history dates add further local events to the historical picture.
