Four signposted hiking trails give you specific options for exploring Pracht on foot. At the same time, the town’s mining history dates back to the 12th century. Your stay can therefore focus on different perspectives: choosing a hiking route based on its length and starting point, and learning about Pracht’s historical development.

Hiking trails by length and starting point

The yellow forest loop is about 8.7 kilometers long, runs mostly through woodland around Hassel, and starts at the parking lot of the Hohegrete forest sports facility. The blue Hohegrete loop is approximately five kilometers long; its starting point is the Eckenstell shelter in Wickhausen. The red circular route connecting villages starts at the playground by the village square in Pracht and is about 5.7 kilometers long.

The two shorter routes, at around five and 5.7 kilometers, are similar in length; at approximately 8.7 kilometers, the yellow forest loop is longer than both. You can first choose a route based on its approximate length and then on its starting point. Colored arrows mark changes in direction, and all four signposted routes can be walked in either direction. Since trail conditions can change, it’s best to check the latest conditions before setting out.

Mining history in Pracht

Mining was already taking place in Pracht in the 12th century. More than 50 mines and mining fields are part of the town’s documented mining history. The headframe of the former Hohegrete mine is also part of this history: it became a local landmark. The history thus spans from the early beginnings of mining to a named landmark that helps shape the town’s history.

Plan your arrival and accommodation

If you’re centering your trip around a particular route, its starting point can also help guide your choice of accommodation. Compare the location of a specific place to stay with the starting point that suits your plans. The starting points differ: they include the parking lot at the Hohegrete forest sports facility, the Eckenstell shelter in Wickhausen, and the playground by the village square in Pracht. This lets you consider your planned hike and the location of your accommodation together, without making any particular route the deciding factor for every stay.

Wickhausen has a railway stop on the Au (Sieg)–Altenkirchen line; Au (Sieg) is listed as the nearest railway station. If you’re planning to travel by train, check the latest timetable before your trip: train connections and stopping patterns can change. This gives you two practical points of reference for planning your trip—the right starting point for a hike and the latest train timetable.

More to explore in the wider destination of Altenkirchen

The wider destination of Altenkirchen offers other historical and cultural attractions. In Flammersfeld, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” in 1849, the world’s first loan fund association. In Marienthal, the Klosterdorfweg trail circles the former Franciscan monastery and passes through the shaded spa forest belonging to the Archdiocese of Cologne. Marienthal remains a popular place of pilgrimage today.
