The 5.4-kilometre Kleiner Wäller Sound Trail circular route starts at the hiking car park in Rott and follows meadow and forest paths towards Oberlahr. The playable sound installations make this a hike with a special focus: they include a wooden cradle, a rainmaker, a wind chime and a standing harp.

Hiking and nature around Rott

The sound trail also passes the former production buildings of the Silberwiese ore mine. Along the loop, you will encounter both the sound stations and traces of the area’s former ore mining. Access points to the trail are listed as approximately 900 metres from Flammersfeld Town Hall and around 750 metres from the junction of Eichen and Rott. There is a free car park for hikers using the sound trail on Walter Bartels Weg in Rott; check the parking situation before setting out.

Haus des Waldes (House of the Forest) is near the forest pavilion. The forest museum displays animals from the local natural environment and provides information boards for nature enthusiasts. It was created as a highlight of the Flammersfeld-Rott-Oberlahr nature trail. Visits are possible by prior telephone appointment. Please confirm the arrangements for your visit again before travelling.

Also near the forest pavilion in Rott is the Mohr family garden, with typical plants and old fruit varieties from traditional farm gardens. Check in advance whether a visit is possible. A herbal seminar run by Beate Mohr in Rott was offered with advance contact in the 2023 route description; enquire about current dates.

Half-timbered houses, bakehouse and village history

Rott is known as a village with many half-timbered houses and a history spanning more than 800 years. One specific site from the village’s more recent history is the former village school, which operated from 1894 to 1965. Sütterlin, also known as German cursive script, can still be seen on the former school building.

The bakehouse is also part of local tradition. The communal bakehouse was built around a stone oven more than 100 years old. The oven was donated in 1984 and rebuilt stone by stone in a half-timbered building in 1986. The bakehouse was used as part of local tradition at village events.

Rott lies in the Westerwald, is surrounded by forest and is located in the Rhine-Westerwald Nature Park. Hiking trails, nature-related attractions and local history therefore offer different focal points for a stay.
