If you choose Oberlahr for a stay, you can combine nature experiences with local history: the Sound Trail follows meadow and forest paths, while the church square and St. Antonius Parish Church offer tangible points of interest for exploring local architectural history. The different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your visit.
The Sound Trail: Experience the Forest and Plan Your Route
The Sound Trail associated with Oberlahr is a 5.4-kilometre circular route. The marked trail runs from Rott to Oberlahr along meadow and forest paths. Wooden instruments make the route an interactive nature experience: they invite you to experience the forest with your senses and engage with it actively. Individual installations may change. So, before setting out, check the route length and marked course again for the latest information.
The entire Sound Trail is suitable for an all-terrain stroller. However, whether it is actually accessible depends on the conditions of the paths and their current maintenance. This is particularly relevant if you are planning your route with a stroller: in addition to general suitability, the condition of the path at the time of your visit also matters.
Wiedweg 04 and Practical Information
Wiedweg 04 offers another perspective on the landscape. The route passes through the Rhein-Westerwald Nature Park, alternating between riverside meadows and wooded heights. At the Oberlahr end, it reaches half-timbered houses and St. Antonius Parish Church on the village square. The route therefore leads from the landscape to the village’s built environment at its destination.
The BĂĽrdenbach-Bruch stop is right on Wiedweg. If you plan to use it when travelling here, check the specific connection and timetable in advance. Free parking is available at Hotel Westerwald-Treff in Oberlahr.
St. Antonius and the History of Oberlahr
St. Antonius Parish Church, a landmark of the municipality, stands on the church square in the town centre. Its history predates the current building: an earlier church existed around 1200 and was demolished around 1848 to make way for a larger replacement. The present Catholic Parish Church of St. Antonius in Oberlahr was built between 1874 and 1876.
There are historical features inside the church, too. It includes a small crypt known as the lower church. A kneeling bench dating from 1695 and a baptismal font from the 13th century have also been preserved; both survived renovation work. These details add older furnishings to the building’s history and show that the present church and its history span different periods.
Another historical landmark is the “Lahrer Herrlichkeit” primary school. Its foundation stone was laid on 7 May 1861, and the building was completed in 1862.
Parish Festivals Throughout the Year
Oberlahr’s parish traditions include a church fair in January, on the weekend after the patronal feast, and a parish festival at the end of August or beginning of September. The two events therefore take place at different times of the year. If you would like to plan your stay around one of the festivals, check the specific dates locally before making arrangements.
More to Explore in the Wider Altenkirchen Destination
The wider Altenkirchen destination offers more cultural and walking themes to explore. In Flammersfeld, Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” in 1849, the world’s first cooperative credit society. In Marienthal, the Klosterdorfweg trail leads around the former Franciscan monastery through the shaded spa forest of the Archdiocese of Cologne. Marienthal remains a popular pilgrimage destination to this day.
