If you are considering Giershausen as a place to stay, you can base your travel plans on its cycling route, landscapes and local history. The official 15 km cycling tour between the Birnbach and Mehrbach valleys heads towards Giershausen. The village is also located between Weyerbusch and Flammersfeld on Federal Highway 256, known locally as the Historic Raiffeisen Road.
Cycling route between hilltops and valley
At an elevation of about 280 m, a connecting road leads towards Giershausen. Changing vegetation and views shape this section. The route continues over the Giershausen heights into the Birnbach Valley; beyond Giershausen, it descends towards the valley. For planning purposes, both the designated 15 km distance and the transition from higher ground to the valley section are relevant. The two figures describe different aspects of the route: 15 km is the cycling tour’s length, while around 280 m is the elevation of the connecting road. This helps distinguish the distance from the elevation.
In the Birnbach Valley, the landscape is shaped by a meandering stream, natural meadows and rocky roadside verges. Frequent sightings of red kites and other birds of prey are also among the route’s nature highlights. The section through the Birnbach Valley is narrow, with limited visibility; do not ride side by side there, but in single file. Official Tour 3 starts at the car park by the community centre in Hilkhausen.
Mill, half-timbered houses and natural monument
The route passes the Kraam Mill, which dates back to the 16th century; its millpond is still clearly visible. A detour leads to Mehren, a half-timbered village that is partly protected as a historic monument. Visitor highlights there include a Romanesque church and the historic village jail. The route thus offers a range of cultural and historical points of interest, each with its own character.
A natural monument in Adorf-Seifen is a hornbeam arch more than 200 years old, considered unique of its kind. Archaeological excavations in Giershausen’s village centre uncovered the remains of a palisade surrounding a motte, believed to have been an early Carolingian refuge fort. This find points to an earlier period than the Kraam Mill and adds an archaeological dimension to the village’s history.
Rest stops and other regional highlights
The Stähler and Heisterholz establishments in Hemmelzen are possible stops along the route. If you plan to stop there, check current visitor arrangements in advance.
The wider Altenkirchen destination also has a historical connection to Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen: in 1849, he founded the “Flammersfelder Hülfsverein zur Unterstützung unbemittelter Landwirthe” in Flammersfeld, the world’s first credit cooperative. For a different cultural and landscape perspective, take the Klosterdorfweg. It leads around the former Franciscan monastery in Marienthal, through the Archdiocese of Cologne’s shady spa forest. Marienthal remains a popular pilgrimage site to this day.
