Bad Bodendorf lies at the gateway to the Ahr Valley, one of the Rhine’s side valleys, and at the beginning of Germany’s largest contiguous red-wine-growing region. The Red Wine Hiking Trail runs through the vineyards of the Ahr Valley. This means there are two points of reference: the town itself and the valley landscape. This is a useful starting point for planning your trip if you would like to choose Bad Bodendorf for its local history while also exploring the Ahr Valley’s wine country.

Water and spa history

The Bad Bodendorf Local History Museum and Archive focuses on the history of Bad Bodendorf’s water, mineral water production and spa operations. Its local and cultural history collections comprise around 3,000 exhibits; historically valuable local objects, documents and photographs are collected and preserved. The three subject areas each offer a different perspective: water is the overarching theme of the town; mineral water production and spa operations show how it was used in manufacturing and spa treatments. Objects, documents and photographs represent different forms of historical evidence: material, written and visual. This makes it possible to understand the collection’s scope both through its subject areas and through its local historical sources.

The war cemetery: history and remembrance

The Bad Bodendorf war cemetery offers a different historical perspective. On the orders of the Allies, it was established in the Sinzig/Bodendorf district in April 1945, mainly for the dead from the “Goldene Meile” camp between Remagen and Sinzig. After the prisoner-of-war camp was cleared in June 1945, the burial site, with more than 1,000 graves, was closed. This sequence of events is essential to understanding the site: its establishment, purpose and closure are connected with the events of 1945. The war cemetery is also the venue for the Ahrweiler district’s central Remembrance Day ceremony. The two historical points of interest are therefore clearly distinct: the museum looks at water and spa history, while the war cemetery focuses on wartime history and remembrance.

Leisure and practical information

For a different kind of leisure activity, Bad Bodendorf has an 18-hole mini golf course. Unlike the historical attractions, mini golf is a clearly defined leisure option, so you can decide whether an active, fun activity suits your trip.

One important consideration when planning leisure activities concerns the historic outdoor thermal pool in Bad Bodendorf’s spa district: it was badly affected by the 2021 Ahr Valley flood disaster and is currently closed. Check its current status before visiting, rather than assuming it will be available during your stay.

When looking for a holiday apartment, the key question is whether you would like to focus your stay on local history and remembrance or on the Ahr Valley’s wine country. You can assess Bad Bodendorf as a destination in light of your interests; first decide which of these themes matters most for your trip.
