Two circular hiking trails connect Harscheid with Schuld, but follow different routes. Circular Trail No. 4 leads from Schuld through Harscheid and back to Schuld; No. 3 runs via Sierscheid and Harscheid back to Schuld. The AhrSteig adds a regional long-distance hiking route. If you are planning an overnight stay, you can first consider whether to focus on the local circular trails or the wider hiking area.

Chapel and Trails Around Harscheid

The Catholic St. Donatus Chapel at MittelstraĂźe 4 is a hall church dating from 1754. This gives you a clearly dated historical and cultural landmark alongside the hiking trails. The chapel and the landscapes along the routes offer different points of interest: one is a specific building in the village, the other takes you along paths over hills, through woodland and past meadows.

Circular Trail No. 4: Route, Scenery and Views

Circular Trail No. 4 starts in the center of Schuld, at the bridge, and returns there at the end of the loop. It leads from Schuld through Harscheid and back. The route is considered moderately difficult, is 7.6 km long and includes 229 meters of ascent and 231 meters of descent. The climb on the way to Harscheid follows a gentle uphill stretch of 1.4 km.

On Locherberg, the trail passes meadows and hawthorn hedges. Through Eichholz, the loop runs alongside stands of oak and beech trees. From a farm track, a forest path of about 250 m leads to MartinshĂĽtte. From there, you can look out over Schuld and the surrounding area; the extent of the view may vary depending on the weather and vegetation.

The loop also offers a glimpse of local geology: a sign for the GEOLOGIEPFAD Schuld stands on Circular Trail No. 4, and the geology trail runs parallel to it for part of the hike. Another detour, about 150 m long, leads to a small observation tower with a view of Am Bahnhof, Branderholz and Bubenley. Check the current trail conditions on site before taking this detour.

Two Circular Trails, One Regional Long-Distance Route

Nos. 3 and 4 offer different points of reference when choosing a route: No. 4 has a specified distance, elevation gain and specific landmarks such as MartinshĂĽtte and the small observation tower. No. 3 connects Schuld, Sierscheid and Harscheid across the local hills before returning to Schuld. This lets you choose based on your preferred route without treating the two loops as the same.

The AhrSteig is a route on a larger scale: it connects the source of the Ahr in Blankenheim with its mouth near Sinzig in seven stages and runs through the wider Ahr region. This regional route differs from the circular trails connecting Harscheid and Schuld. It is therefore a separate point of reference if your trip planning extends beyond a single local loop.

Getting There and Finding Your Way Before the Hike

A travel guide updated in 2016 recommends taking the train from Remagen to AhrbrĂĽck, followed by a bus to Schuld, for the route to Harscheid. For drivers, the route described goes from the A61 at the Meckenheim interchange via the B257 to DĂĽmpelfeld, then continues along the L73 to Schuld. Before traveling, check current train and bus services, road conditions and local access.

A parking area for Circular Trail No. 4 is close to the starting point, opposite the “zum Köbes” country inn. Check the current parking options on site. Since this loop starts and ends in Schuld, it is helpful to plan your journey and the trail together.

Cultural Attractions in Ahrweiler

Ahrweiler also offers its own cultural attractions. The Schützen House in Ahrweiler displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries, including uniforms, pictorial documentation and historic marksmen’s rifles. At the Roman Villa on Silberberg, visitors can see a model of the Roman estate and watch an audiovisual presentation. These attractions offer additional historical and cultural perspectives alongside St. Donatus Chapel, but they are located in Ahrweiler.
