The Wehrer Kesselweg combines a circular walk in Wehr with countryside and local history. It leads through meadows and woodland to an artificial cold-water geyser and also passes through orchards, fields and forest. Two route lengths offer a clear choice depending on how far you want to walk. Wehr also has a Baroque parish garden that is a seasonal highlight.

Two route lengths on the Wehrer Kesselweg

The Wehrer Kesselweg is a family-friendly circular trail, with a shorter 4.5 km option and a longer 8.2 km route. The walk starts at the hiking car park by the Römerhalle in Wehr. Along the way, nine information boards or stones provide insights into carbon dioxide production, mineralised deep water and historic iron mining. The trail’s themes therefore include water and former iron extraction as well as natural scenery. It leads to an artificial cold-water geyser. Its operating times may change, so check in advance if you are planning a visit.

Orchards, views and a glacial formation

The landscape along the Kesselweg alternates between orchards, fields and forest. From the viewpoints, you can look out over the Wehrer Kessel and the volcanic landscape of the eastern Eifel. The trail also passes a glacial fold from the Ice Age at Dachsbusch. This means the same circular walk brings open countryside, forest and a geological landmark together. When planning your route, you can use the two lengths as a guide and also decide whether views, nature or the information topics are your main interest.

Baroque garden by the former monastery church

A publicly accessible Baroque parish garden is located by the former monastery church in Wehr. Seasonal flowers and views of the southern Wehrer Kessel and the surrounding mountains shape a visit from spring to autumn. Check the access arrangements locally before your visit. The garden offers a different experience from the circular trail: seasonal planting and views take centre stage here, while the Kesselweg explores several landscape and historical themes.

Culture and trails in the wider Ahrweiler destination

The wider Ahrweiler destination has other historical and cultural attractions. At the Roman Villa on Silberberg in Ahrweiler, visitors can see a model of the Roman country estate and watch an audiovisual presentation. The House of the Marksmen in Ahrweiler displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries, including uniforms, visual documentation and historic marksmen’s rifles. Ahrweiler’s three marksmen’s associations have run the museum since 2002; visits are possible by arrangement. The Ahrweiler District Archive is a local history information and advice centre for historical and regional heritage enquiries.

The region also offers opportunities for hiking and cycling. The certified hiking trails Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig are in the Ahrweiler district. The Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous marked local trails add to the district’s network of routes. The Rhine Cycle Route and Ahr Cycle Route are cycling routes with which the district particularly appeals to cycling tourists. These routes are located across the district; they complement the picture of Wehr without replacing the Kesselweg as a local circular walk in its own right.

When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the places and scales involved: the Kesselweg and parish garden are the experiences featured here in Wehr; the cultural attractions in Ahrweiler and the district’s trail network belong to the wider regional context. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, choose a location based on which of these themes you would like to make the focus of your stay.
