Oberzissen offers a clear choice for days spent on foot or on a mountain bike: three signposted hiking trails have individually specified lengths and starting points, and there are also six combinable mountain bike loops. For planning, it is worth first considering the starting point and distance of the hiking trails, or the combined length of the MTB loops.
Hiking and mountain biking in Oberzissen
The 14.9-kilometre Quackenbach-Brenkbach Trail starts at the village square. Two more trails start at the train station: the 8-kilometre Oberzissen Circular Trail and the 2.8-kilometre Panorama Trail. This lets you distinguish them by starting point: the train station is the starting point for two routes, while the village square is the starting point for the longest. In terms of the stated distances, the Panorama Trail is the shortest and the Quackenbach-Brenkbach Trail the longest; the Oberzissen Circular Trail falls between them.
All three hiking trails are signposted. As trail markings may change in the future, check the route before setting out. The starting points and lengths give you a concrete basis for distinguishing between the trails and planning your day accordingly.
Mountain bikers have six loops to choose from, which can be combined and run in different directions. Together, they have a total length of approximately 40 to 50 kilometres. The mountain biking infrastructure opened in April 2023. Unlike the hiking trails, each of which has a specified length, the kilometre figure here refers to the loops combined. This is a useful distinction when comparing the two offerings by their stated distances.
Motorhome pitches are also part of what Oberzissen offers: they are located at the sports ground and complement the hiking and mountain biking infrastructure. If you are travelling by motorhome, confirm availability and operating conditions locally before your arrival.
Culture and trails in the wider Ahrweiler destination
The wider Ahrweiler destination offers other things to explore. In Ahrweiler itself, the Haus der SchĂĽtzen displays art-historical treasures from the past three centuries. These include uniforms, photographic documentation and historic sporting rifles. This gives a visit a cultural and historical focus that differs from the walking and mountain biking activities in Oberzissen.
The Roman Villa at Silberberg is also in Ahrweiler. Visitors can see a model of the Roman estate and an audiovisual presentation there. The three Ahrweiler marksmen’s societies have operated a museum since 2002; visits are possible by appointment. These two attractions have different focuses: the Roman Villa presents the Roman estate through a model and a presentation, while the Haus der Schützen displays, among other things, uniforms, photographic documentation and historic rifles.
Hiking and cycling routes in the Ahrweiler district also broaden the regional perspective. The certified Rheinburgenweg, Eifelleiter and AhrSteig hiking trails are located in the Ahrweiler district. The Red Wine Hiking Trail and numerous marked municipal trails add to the local hiking network. The Ahrweiler district also appeals to cyclists in particular with the Rhine Cycle Route and the Ahr Cycle Route. These routes therefore form another regional area of interest alongside the specifically named hiking trails and mountain bike loops in Oberzissen.
