For a hiking stay in Brohl-Lützing, the Rhine promenade and three moderately difficult circular routes provide clear points of reference. The routes differ in length and waypoints, so you can choose based primarily on whether you are looking for a shorter loop or a longer panoramic route. The railway station is another important landmark; the Katharinaweg can be accessed from the station forecourt.

Find your bearings by the Rhine and at the station

The Brohl Rhine promenade offers paths along the river, a barrier-free harbor mole, a beer garden and a pier. This means there are other named points of interest here in addition to the riverside paths. The beer garden and pier may not always be open, so it is best to check whether they are operating before making them a firm part of your plans.

Brohl railway station is the operating center of the narrow-gauge Vulkan-Express railway and is directly opposite the DB station. Connections to the MittelrheinBahn are available from there. The Rhine and the town center are a short walk away. Checking the timetables can help you plan your journey by train. The Dicktberg Circular Route starts at the station, while the Katharinaweg can be accessed from the station forecourt.

Three circular routes by length and character

At 11.7 kilometers, the Dicktberg Circular Route is the shortest of the three routes described. Its waypoints include the Rheinblick shelter, a viewpoint bench on the Dicktberg, a Roman quarry, the Hohe Buche volcano and the Mosenmühle mill. The route combines viewpoints with distinctive features such as the Roman quarry and the volcano.

The 13.4-kilometer Himmelsleiterweg starts and ends on the Rhine in the Rheinanlagen. One of its defining features is a steep, rocky path: the Himmelsleiter, which leads to the Lützinger Höhe. From there and along the route, views extend across the Rhine Valley, the Brohl Valley and the Eifel. Those choosing this loop will find both a clearly defined climb and sweeping views across a broad area.

At 15.7 kilometers, the Katharinaweg is the longest of the three loops. This moderately difficult panoramic route runs between the Lower Middle Rhine Valley and the surrounding heights; viewpoints and features relating to volcanic history define the route. The start and finish are by the Rheinanlagen, next to the Aalschokker Katharina.

All three circular routes are rated moderately difficult. Their lengths range from 11.7 to 13.4 and 15.7 kilometers. The figures make it easy to compare distances, while the waypoints can help you choose: the Dicktberg route features a volcano and mill, the Himmelsleiterweg a rocky climb and views across several landscapes, and the Katharinaweg panoramic scenery and volcanic history. As trail conditions can change, it is advisable to check the current route information before setting out.
