Frühburgunder grapes, vineyards and chapels give Bachem a distinct character: the village is a historic wine-growing community known for cultivating Frühburgunder grapes. At the same time, several described hiking trails lead to the Lourdes Chapel or through Bachem’s vineyards. You can therefore choose to focus on outdoor activities or on architectural and art history, or include both topics separately in your day’s plans. When looking for a holiday apartment in Bachem, it helps to consider whether trails, vineyards or historic chapels matter most to you.

Hiking trails with different connections to the village

The Bad Neuenahr Circular Route No. 3 starts and ends at the Lourdes Chapel near Bachem and leads to the “Bachemer Sonnenschein” vineyard. The Medical Spa Hiking Trail MK I also leads to the Lourdes Chapel and through Bachem’s vineyards. The descriptions therefore differ mainly in their reference to vineyards: Route No. 3 names a specific vineyard, while vineyards are part of the route on MK I. If you want a particular vineyard to be part of your plans, this difference is a practical point of reference.

Another option is Stage 6 of the AhrSteig, which descends into the Bachemer Bach valley to the Lourdes Chapel. The chapel is situated above Himmelsburger Straße, hidden in the Bachemer Wiesental. It is especially popular with hikers and walkers, and has also become a pilgrimage site. This makes it both a specific hiking destination and a place of religious significance. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

The Lourdes Chapel is the common point of reference, but its role differs: it is the start and finish of Circular Route No. 3, the destination of MK I, and the endpoint of the descending AhrSteig stage. When choosing a route, you can therefore consider whether you want the loop to start and end at the chapel or whether the chapel is the destination on the described stage.

Chapels and architectural history

The southern part of St. Anna Chapel was built in the Romanesque period, probably around 1220. The chapel houses a Gothic Madonna and Child dating from the early 15th century. St. Anna thus brings together two different periods: Romanesque fabric in its southern section and a later Gothic work of art. The Leonardus Chapel was built in 1716 on the western edge of the village. The chapels therefore differ both in their architectural history and in their location: St. Anna houses the Madonna, while the Leonardus Chapel stands on the western edge of the village.

Wine traditions in the village landscape

The connection with wine is reflected both in the cultivation of Frühburgunder grapes and in the name of the “Bachemer Sonnenschein” vineyard on Circular Route No. 3. The former municipal bakehouse, dating from 1650, has housed the Bachem Winemakers’ Museum since 1978. Bachem thus brings together winegrowing as a defining local feature, the vineyard as part of a hiking route, and the winemakers’ museum as a point of cultural and historical interest. These different connections give you several ways to choose the focus of your stay.
