Discover Rech through its different highlights: steep, terraced vineyards, hiking options such as the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Saffenburg Loop, and the architectural history of St. Luzia. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider whether you want to focus mainly on hiking, wine and dining, or exploring cultural history. This way, you can plan your trip around your interests.

Viticulture and Dining

The steep, terraced vineyards shape the hills around Rech, as well as local life and festivals. The wine selection includes Spätburgunder, Riesling and sparkling wine. Many wineries offer direct sales and on-site tastings; individual wineries’ participation may change. So if you’re planning to attend a wine tasting or buy wine, check the offer with the winery in advance.

Restaurants and inns serve local and international dishes. Their offerings may also change, so it’s helpful to check for up-to-date information before your visit. A guided tour of approximately 90 minutes combines local history, current topics and insights into viticulture. It may be scheduled seasonally; check in advance for your preferred date.

Hiking Trails and Views

Local hiking options include the Red Wine Hiking Trail and the Saffenburg Loop. The Red Wine Hiking Trail passes through vineyards and reaches the Recher Herrenberg vineyard. A hike starting in Rech offers views of the village, the ruins of Saffenburg Castle, and the Recher Herrenberg and Recher Blume vineyards. The route and the views are different points of reference: the information about the Red Wine Hiking Trail concerns its route through the vineyards and the Recher Herrenberg, while the hike starting in Rech is notable for the views mentioned above. Check trail conditions before setting out.

There are train stations along the Red Wine Hiking Trail. If you plan to travel by train, check current connections; you should also look up the traffic and parking information relevant to your journey in advance.

St. Luzia and Local History

The foundation stone of today’s Church of St. Luzia was laid on May 8, 1720. The church was built from local rubble stone and has a hall layout with a three-sided choir. Its high altar dates from the 18th century. The stained-glass windows date from 1967 to 1970; among the saints depicted is St. Urban, the patron saint of winemakers and wine.

A separate historical reference is the mention of a chapel in Rech in 1499. Its patron saints were Odilia and Luzia. This date refers to that chapel, not to the laying of the foundation stone of today’s church. The two details offer different perspectives on the timeline of the village’s church history.

Festivals and the Best Time to Visit

The Winemakers’ Festival has been celebrated on the third weekend in September since 1964. The tradition of the Lucia Market dates back to a pilgrimage privilege granted in 1510; the market was revived in 1990. It takes place on the second weekend of Advent. These dates offer two different seasonal reasons to visit. As the exact dates may vary each year, check the events calendar before planning your trip.

Plan Your Stay and Travel

Rech offers 26 pitches near the Ahr for motorhome travelers; the number may change. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan around the interests and dates that matter to you: hiking trails, wine tastings, local dining or one of the festivals. For hikes, it’s worth checking current trail conditions; for events, check the exact dates.
