The chapel in Trierscheid and two routes with different courses give the village distinct focal points: local history and tours on foot or by bike. The 24-kilometre circular hiking trail is particularly specific; the cycling route leads to Nohn. Deciding which activity you want to shape your stay is a useful first step in planning.

Hillside setting and paths along the Nohner Bach

Trierscheid lies on a hill bordered by the Trierbach, the Nohner Bach and the valley An der Kehr. The Nohner Bach also features on the routes: the circular hiking trail crosses it, while the cycling route runs through the Nohner Bachtal and also crosses the stream. This gives both activities a shared landscape setting, although they follow different routes.

St. Anthony’s Chapel and its older building elements

St. Anthony’s Chapel in Trierscheid dates from 1884. Its benches were made around 1765 and transferred from the former chapel. The late Gothic trefoil tracery window and the segmental-arched portal frame also come from the predecessor building. A stone altar slab found during renovation in 1964 continues to serve its original purpose. For the chronology, note that 1884 refers to the construction of the chapel, while around 1765 is when the benches were made.

On foot: the Trierscheid–Nohn–Borler–Bodenbach circular trail

The circular trail is 24 kilometres long and takes a little over five hours. This makes it a longer day’s activity; if you plan to do it, set aside a large part of the day. The route crosses the Nohner Bach, continues along Route 16 and then reaches Nohn. Some sections are unpaved and can be muddy. The trail’s parking area is at the southern edge of Trierscheid. As trail and parking conditions may change, check both locally before setting out.

Cycling towards Nohn

The cycling route from Trierscheid to Nohn follows farm tracks through the Kehr and into the Nohner Bachtal. It crosses the stream and continues towards Nohn across the heath; there, it follows a farm track that is paved throughout. This section forms part of the HBR-signposted Adenau-Hillesheim Regional Connecting Route. For the hike, distance, duration and surface are important planning considerations; for the cycling route, the described course is shaped by the Kehr, the valley and the heath.

Plan your stay around your activity

You can base your hotel search on your day’s plans. The hike takes a little over five hours; the cycling route connects to Nohn. Consider whether a longer day of hiking or a cycling leg will shape your stay, and plan your overnight accommodation accordingly. This helps you settle on your priorities before choosing a specific place to stay.
