Niederbergheim is picturesquely situated in the Möhne Valley, on the edge of Arnsberg Forest Nature Park. Two hiking car parks and trails of varying lengths provide practical guidance for planning your visit. The Niederbergheim Mill and the Old Saw Frame are also historic landmarks. This gives you the option of including both trails through green surroundings and aspects of local history in your plans.

Hiking Trails and Starting Points

There are two hiking car parks in the Niederbergheim area for Arnsberg Forest Nature Park: at Schillingsweg on the western edge of the village, and at Eisenberg on the L 856 between Niederbergheim and Hirschberg. From the Schillingsweg hiking car park, you can follow the marked A 9 and A 12 circular trails. Parking conditions may change, so check them before setting off.

The A 9 is 7.4 kilometres long, and the A 12 is 3.2 kilometres long. The 4.2-kilometre difference makes it easy to compare the distances: the A 12 is the shorter option, while the A 9 is the longer one. There is also the short “Niederbergheim Circular Hike,” which runs from Niederbergheim to Oberbergheim and offers a different connection to the local area. Conditions on the A 9 and A 12 trails may change; check the latest information before setting off.

The Möhne Valley Skywalk is located on Liethhöhe between Niederbergheim and Allagen and is part of the “3 Landscape Experience Worlds” LEADER project. It can be reached on foot from the designated car parks in 15 to 20 minutes. The Möhne Valley Skywalk is accessible. Keep an eye on parking conditions when planning your visit, as parking regulations may change.

Village History and the Möhne Floodplains

The Niederbergheim Mill was built in 1551. Its year of construction provides a clear point of reference in the village’s history. The “Old Niederbergheim Saw Frame” is another historic feature: it stands right beside the Möhne Valley Cycle Path and is a technical heritage monument. It recalls the centuries-long importance of forestry and wood processing to the village.

The historic landmarks reflect different themes: the mill is associated with its year of construction, while the saw frame is connected with forestry and wood processing. This shows that local history is reflected not only in a single building, but also in the importance of a former area of work.

“Möhnis Welt” is located in the Möhne floodplains between Warstein-Allagen and Niederbergheim. It is an informal learning centre. Alongside the hiking trails and technical heritage monuments, it adds a dedicated learning centre in the Möhne floodplains.

More Hiking Options in the Wider Warstein Destination

In the wider Warstein destination, hiking trails 1 and 2 differ in both length and route. Trail 1 is 16.5 kilometres long and passes through Bilsteintal, Paradies and Hubertusquelle to the Lörmecke Tower, continuing to the Lörmecke Tower car park and Sedansteich. Trail 2 is 6.3 kilometres long and runs from the Lörmecke Tower car park via Kapellenplatz to the Lörmecke Tower. Comparing the two routes gives you the choice of a longer trail with several named stops and a shorter trail with a different route.

The 35-metre-high Lörmecke Tower offers panoramic views from the Hochsauerland across the Haarstrang and the Westphalian Bay to the Teutoburg Forest. These trails and the tower are part of the wider Warstein destination; they offer a complementary perspective alongside Niederbergheim’s trails and attractions.
