Zingst combines maritime history, cultural attractions and activities on the Baltic Sea. When planning your visit, you can choose different focuses: historic buildings and memorial sites, hands-on exhibitions, or time at the beach and on the water. The pier also offers several ways to experience the town—as a destination for walks and with the diving gondola at its end.

Cultural history and hands-on activities

The Zingst Local History Museum is housed in a former captain’s house from the 19th century and tells the story of the Zingst Peninsula. The museum includes a historic farmyard with several restored buildings. Faithfully reproduced furniture and objects offer a glimpse of rural life in centuries past. The house and farmyard thus provide two ways to explore local history: the captain’s house and the furnishings of everyday life in the past.

The Zingst Experimentarium takes a different approach, with more than 70 interactive stations for experimenting with science and technology. Its varied workshop program also gives visitors the opportunity to create their own works of art. Those who want to combine exhibitions with hands-on activities will find a different focus here than at the local history museum.

The neo-Gothic St. Peter and Paul Church was built to plans by Friedrich August StĂĽler. StĂĽler was a student of Karl Friedrich Schinkel, and the church was consecrated in 1862. A series of evening concerts takes place there each summer. Check the current program for individual dates. At the Max HĂĽnten House, regular events include exhibition openings and multi-vision shows; readings and other cultural events are held there throughout the year. Here, too, it is worth checking the dates for your travel period.

The Zingsthof and the Seamen’s Grave offer further historical perspectives. The Zingsthof was built in 1929 and gained significance during the Nazi era as a place of work and meeting for members of the Confessing Church. The Seamen’s Grave in the cemetery recalls Zingst’s maritime tradition and commemorates sailors who lost their lives in the Baltic Sea. These places complement visits to museums and churches with different aspects of local history.

Pier, beach and water sports

The current Zingst pier was inaugurated in May 1993. It is 270 metres long and 2.50 metres wide, and invites visitors to take walks in every season. A diving gondola with room for up to 30 people has been located at the end of the pier since 2013. Visitors can use it to explore the underwater world of the Baltic Sea. At this one location, a walk along the pier and a view beneath the water’s surface offer two different ways to experience it.

In front of Zingst is a stone-free sandy beach up to 30 metres wide. Lifeguards patrol it during the summer months. At the sports beach near beach access 14, visitors can windsurf, kitesurf and enjoy the sunset on a stand-up paddleboard. Swimming, paddling, surfing, sailing and kayaking are also possible in the Baltic Sea. Participation in these activities depends on conditions and provider availability.

At the Zingst Water Sports Centre, visitors can take courses in numerous water sports and rent the appropriate equipment. If you plan to take a course or rent equipment, check current availability in advance. There is a practical difference between doing activities independently on the beach and using the services of the water sports centre: one option focuses on doing the activity yourself, while the other involves a course or equipment rental.

Another place to visit

From Zingst, the Sundische Wiese National Park Exhibition can be reached on foot or by bicycle via the sea dike and the Osterwald, or by taking the country road east. Different conditions should be taken into account when choosing a route: road conditions and local restrictions may vary. Check the current situation before setting out. The exhibition can be planned as a separate activity alongside what Zingst has to offer, without assuming a specific journey time or distance.

The places and activities mentioned here give you concrete ideas for choosing Zingst for your trip and finding suitable hotels.
