For a trip to Süderholz, historic buildings and parks provide a clear theme. In Griebenow, the castle chapel and historic castle park take centre stage. In Rakow, you’ll find the former medieval pilgrimage church “Zum Heiligen Leichnam”; Klevenow adds a small chapel and Burg Klevenow Park to the selection. This lets you consider cultural history and landscape as distinct highlights of your stay.
Castle Chapel and Listed Building in Griebenow
Griebenow Castle Chapel is a 15-sided, half-timbered central-plan building constructed in 1654. The altar, patronal pews, pulpit and organ have largely been preserved in their original condition. The year of construction, the building’s basic form and its furnishings offer different perspectives on the structure: its architecture is a subject in its own right, as are the preserved features of the church interior.
Another building in Griebenow is the mile obelisk on the L26. It is listed as a historic building in the Vorpommern-Rügen district’s register of monuments.
Historic Parks and Natural Features
The historic park of Griebenow Castle was first documented in 1706 and today covers around 15 hectares. The year refers to its first documentary record, while the area given refers to its present-day extent. This distinguishes its historical reference from its approximate current size.
Walking through the castle park, visitors can experience a high level of biodiversity in its flora and fauna. The park also has a rectangular castle island. Burg Klevenow Park features a pond with two islands; many rare trees and shrubs and several impressive natural monuments can still be found there. When comparing the parks, you can use these distinct natural and landscape features as a guide.
Churches and Chapels in Rakow and Klevenow
The church “Zum Heiligen Leichnam” in Rakow is a former medieval pilgrimage church. It was probably associated with a host miracle. The church also houses a Fischer organ. The pilgrimage history and the organ are two distinct aspects of this place of worship.
The small Klevenow Chapel was probably built between 1650 and 1730 on the remains of the ramparts of the castle of the same name, in what is now Süderholz. Its dating therefore differs from that of Griebenow Castle Chapel: the year 1654 is given for the latter, whereas a probable period is given for Klevenow. The two buildings thus offer different historical points of reference.
A Seasonal Break in Griebenow
A club-run café on the ground floor of Griebenow Castle serves coffee and cake specialities. The café operates seasonally. If you plan to stop there, check in advance whether it will be open during your travel dates. This will help you plan this culinary stop to suit the season.
