At the entrance to the village of Kummerow stands the old Pomeranian schoolhouse, with small pointed turrets.
Schoolhouse and Castle
The schoolhouse is considered a local attraction and is privately owned. If you are planning a visit, please check in advance whether visits are possible. The turrets are its distinctive architectural feature, giving the schoolhouse a unique architectural accent.
The castle in Kummerow is also privately owned. It was built in 1912 and later used as a convalescent home, a school and a kindergarten. These different functions show that the building’s history did not end with its construction, but was also shaped by changes in its use. The castle has since been reconstructed and modernised, and a park adjoins the building. Check whether visits are possible before planning a visit; ownership and access conditions at the castle may change.
The two buildings offer different historical perspectives: the schoolhouse is notable for an architectural feature, while the castle is notable for its construction date, sequence of uses and renovation. This makes it possible to view Kummerow’s architecture and building functions from different angles.
Getting your bearings and activities in the municipality
Kummerow is within the municipality of Niepars, on the tourist route between the Rügen and Darß areas, via Stralsund and Barth. This location provides a broader geographical reference point. Leisure activities are available across the wider municipality, not just in Kummerow. If you would like to visit riding stables in the area, you can register with them. There are also opportunities for hiking and cycling along the Bodden waters. These options differ in what you need to plan for: registration is relevant for riding stables, while hiking and cycling routes are located along the Bodden waters.
The tourist route provides a broader framework, while riding stables and the Bodden waters offer specific activities in the municipality. This can help you decide whether to focus on Kummerow itself or on other activities in the municipality.
In the wider destination of Niepars
The village church in Niepars adds its own cultural and historical focus to Kummerow’s schoolhouse and castle. In Niepars itself, there is a two-aisled brick church dating from the 13th century. The term “two-aisled” refers to the layout of the church interior; brick is another distinctive architectural feature. The church is surrounded by a cemetery, and a small burial chapel stands at the southern entrance.
Inside the church is a chalice-shaped granite baptismal font dating from the 14th century. The dilapidated tower was demolished in the 18th century. In 1867, the village church received an organ from the Stralsund workshop of Friedrich Albert Mehmel. The building, its furnishings and its alterations can thus be distinguished by period: the church and baptismal font date from the Middle Ages, while the tower’s demolition and the organ belong to later centuries. The cemetery and chapel add features of the surrounding grounds, while the font and organ are specific details of the church’s furnishings.
A small pond with seating near the church invites you to take a break.
