The Heilgeist Church in Abtshagen, Glashagen Manor House and the village cinema each offer a different focus for a stay in Wittenhagen. Here, architectural and organ history meet a historic estate and a regular cultural programme. When planning your trip, it is worth choosing the places and dates according to your own interests.

Heilgeist Church and Organ in Abtshagen

The Heilgeist Church in Abtshagen was completed in 1380. Construction was initiated by the Cistercian monastery of Neuencamp, now Franzburg. The church is home to one of the few original, fully restored organs built by organ maker Carl August Buchholz. The instrument dates from 1842. This brings together two distinct historical milestones: the completion of the church in the 14th century and the creation of the organ in the 19th century. Those interested in architectural history can focus on the church’s origins; the organ also brings the history of organ building into the picture. The two dates belong to different parts of the site’s history and should not be read as a single construction date.

Glashagen Manor House and the Woodland Walk

Glashagen Manor House is over 100 years old. Its grounds include a meadow for camping, a bakehouse, a forge, a pavilion and a large wooden stage. The estate therefore includes a number of features in addition to the manor house itself. If you are planning to use the grounds, arrange the current group packages in advance. From Wittenhagen railway station, the manor house can be reached by walking over 2.5 km through a forest. The route therefore links arrival at the station with a walk; plan this distance as a separate part of your visit.

Walking Rest Area and Village Cinema

A walking rest area was created in 2007 at the Schützengelände in Kakernehl. If you plan to make it a scheduled stop, check its condition before your visit. A village cinema is held at regular intervals at the Democracy Centre in Abtshagen. A screening is scheduled there for 7:30 p.m. on 16 October 2026. Before travelling, check the events calendar for this date and the current programme. This will help you distinguish between a single scheduled evening and the recurring programme when planning your trip.

Wittenhagen in the Wider Travel Destination of Vorpommern-RĂĽgen

The wider regional setting is Vorpommern-Rügen. The district of Vorpommern-Rügen includes the island of Rügen and the offshore islands of Hiddensee and Ummanz; the Fischland-Darß-Zingst peninsula chain is also part of the district. The number of museums there is estimated at around 60. In Stralsund, the Old Town is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar.” On Rügen, the beech forests in Jasmund National Park are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Ancient and Primeval Beech Forests of the Carpathians and Other Regions of Europe.” These examples give an impression of the district’s cultural and natural diversity. They provide regional context alongside the specific local points of interest in Abtshagen, Kakernehl and Glashagen.
