Salt Road and Captains’ Houses

The historic Salt Road gives Dändorf a tangible connection to its cultural history: the road has been preserved as the village street and can be visited as a historic monument alongside old captains’ houses. In the 18th century, the route ran from Bad Sülze via the Bodden harbor in Dändorf to Wismar and Schwerin; salt was transported along it. The preserved road brings this history to life in the village, while the former route also represents a connection beyond Dändorf.

Dändorf History Museum

The Dändorf History Museum adds to the picture of the village and its maritime past. It is housed in the former fire station of the Dändorf fire brigade and presents changing exhibitions on the history of the Baltic Sea resort. Topics include the importance of sailing and steam navigation for Dändorf and Dierhagen, local captains, and the historic North Mecklenburg Salt Road between Sülze and Wismar, which ran through Dändorf. Local history, shipping and trade routes thus come together in one building, although the exhibitions change over time. The history museum is open to visitors daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. from May to October; check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.

Bodden Lagoon and Salt Harbor

Dändorf is situated on a Bodden lagoon. The historic salt harbor in Dändorf has an access depth of 1.50 m. This specific detail may be relevant when planning a water-based trip; check current conditions before setting out.

Dierhagen as the wider travel destination

In the wider travel destination of Dierhagen, beaches, boat trips and seasonal excursions complement Dändorf’s cultural and historical attractions. Dierhagen’s beach is about seven kilometers long and up to 30 meters wide, with fine white sand. Some sections are designated as naturist beaches, while others are dog beaches. As these designations may change seasonally, check the signs on site. Dierhagen beach has access points for visitors with mobility impairments. Accessible toilets are available at some beach entrances; availability may vary from one entrance to another.

The Kruse and Voß passenger boat company also departs from Dierhagen harbor on Bodden lagoon tours to the “Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft” National Park aboard the passenger ships MS “Ostseebad Wustrow,” MS “Bültenkieker” and MS “Boddenkieker.” Routes and timetables are seasonal; check them before your trip. Another option is the “Hike through the Great Moor” tour: from May to October, it combines a bike ride with a hike through the Ribnitz Great Moor and starts at the Haus des Gastes in Dierhagen Strand. Check the current dates for the seasonal program.

When choosing where to stay, it helps to distinguish between these attractions: Dändorf’s local highlights are the Salt Road, captains’ houses and history museum; the beach, boat trips and moor hike are part of the wider travel destination of Dierhagen.
