Lietzow lies on the narrowest strip of land between the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden lagoons. This location gives the village a clear orientation between two bodies of water. The sandy beach, hiking and cycling trails, and cultural history offer different focal points for a stay. If you are looking for a hotel in Lietzow, you can choose based on whether you mainly want to plan trips around the lagoon, routes through the countryside, or cultural-history attractions.

Lagoon, beach and protected areas

Lietzow has a sandy beach. In Lietzow, the natural beach along the Bodden Panorama Trail invites you to take a swimming break. Large Natura 2000 European protected areas surround Lietzow to the north and south. Northeast of the village lie the Wostevitzer Teiche, protected, natural shallow lakes. They provide a habitat for amphibians, reptiles and numerous specially protected bird species; access to the shores is restricted.

The Schmale Heide nature reserve, with its flint fields, is also nearby. From Lietzow, you can reach it on foot via the steep-slope path running parallel to the railway, or by bike through the forest. Surrounded by woodland, the flint fields are characterized by white stones and open to semi-open vegetation. Local trail conditions and possible closures may affect access; check before setting out.

Hiking and cycling routes

The 24-kilometre quality hiking trail, the Bodden Panorama Trail, passes through scenic countryside along the Großer Jasmunder Bodden from Neuenkirchen via Lietzow to Mukran. Another hike follows the shores of the Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden to Ralswiek and back. This gives you different destinations to choose from: the panorama trail continues to Mukran, while the other hike goes to Ralswiek and back.

A well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails leads from Lietzow to the flint fields, to Mukran and Binz, and through the Semperwald forest to Martinshafen and Glowe. Cycling routes also include a trip from Lietzow to Pulitz Island. Check current access arrangements and seasonal restrictions in advance. Trail conditions can also change, so check them before your trip.

Activities on and by the water

The Kleiner and Großer Jasmunder Bodden lagoons are fishing waters for pike, zander, perch and flounder. If you want to fish, check the applicable rules and seasons in advance. Lietzow is recommended as a starting point for a kayaking trip on the Großer Jasmunder Bodden. A small, slightly stony beach is suitable for launching kayaks; check the shore conditions before setting out.

There is a slipway at the Bücherbahnhof where boats can be launched into the Kleiner Jasmunder Bodden. Motorboats are subject to the applicable restrictions and regulations. This helps clarify the different ways Lietzow is connected to the water: the Großer Bodden is the starting point for the recommended kayaking trip, while the slipway at the Bücherbahnhof is on the Kleiner Bodden.

Archaeological and architectural history

The “Lietzow culture” refers to the final phase of the Mesolithic period, when nomadic hunter-gatherers lived in the area, and was named after Lietzow. The village name thus also appears in the name of a prehistoric period.

In the centre of Lietzow stands Schlösschen Klein Lichtenstein, a miniature replica of Lichtenstein Castle near Reutlingen in the Swabian Jura. It was built around 1893 by the master builder of the railway line across the Lietzow causeway. The building thus combines distinctive miniature architecture with the history of the railway line across the causeway.
