Saal lies on the southeastern shore of the Saaler Bodden. The municipal area includes Bodden waters, mixed woodland and larger forest areas; the landscape can be explored on foot and by bicycle. Water, woodland and local history offer different ways to shape a stay. Specific attractions include water sports and boat trips, as well as fishing, the Saaler Apostelsteine and historical details of the church. You can choose your destination based on whether you would particularly like to spend time by the water, enjoy nature or explore culture.

Bodden Lagoon, Harbour and Water Sports

Neuendorf sports harbour is on the eastern shore of the Saaler Bodden. It has a natural bathing area with access for SUPs, kayaks, pedal boats and surfers. The Saal Water Sports Centre offers kitesurfing, SUP, wing foiling and kayaking; check directly with the provider for current offerings before your visit. A boat rental at Neuendorf harbour rents motorboats for excursions and fishing trips, with or without a boating licence. Boat trips from Neuendorf can include a journey across the Saaler Bodden through the Neuendorfer Bülten. When planning your day, the natural bathing area, the centre’s offerings and the option of a motorboat trip provide different choices. Tourist information is available at the Neuendorf waterway rest stop.

Fishing and a Woodland Destination

Fishing is possible in the Saaler Tonkuhlen and the Saaler Bach with a tourist fishing licence. The Saaler Apostelsteine form a ring of 13 stones in the Saaler Wald and are freely accessible. Access on your own is via Saaler Straße “Kolonie” to the edge of the forest. This gives you two different options for planning your day: fishing requires a tourist fishing licence, while the Apostelsteine offer a clearly identified, freely accessible woodland destination.

Church and Regional Culture

The Gothic brick church is Saal’s oldest building. Its tower clock mechanism is fully preserved, including the timekeeping mechanism and the striking mechanism. The timekeeping mechanism runs the clock, while the striking mechanism indicates the time by striking. The church also contains grave steles, mostly from the 18th century, which were brought there for their protection.

In KĂĽckenshagen, the Kulturscheune showcases regional art and artists. In contrast to the historic church, it offers a different cultural focus: regional art.

At the District Level: Vorpommern-RĂĽgen

Saal is a municipality in the district of Vorpommern-Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The district is home to an estimated 60 museums. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. In Ribnitz-Damgarten, the Galerie im Kloster primarily presents regional contemporary art, as well as a permanent exhibition of prints by Lyonel Feininger. The Vorpommern-Rügen district art collection comprises around 500 works in painting, prints, sculpture, ceramics, silk painting and textile design; it spans from the late 19th century to the present day. Vorpommern-Rügen is also known, among other things, for the Störtebeker Festival. If you would like to plan your visit around the gallery or a festival performance, check current visitor information or specific dates.
