Fuhlendorf lies on Redensee Bay on the Bodstedter Bodden. This destination combines a nature trail through the forest with natural bathing spots and a history that spans everything from sailboat building to the shipwreck JOHANNA. If you are planning a stay, you can use these different themes to guide your choice: should you focus on the puzzle trail, views of the Bodden or maritime heritage?
The JOHANNA and Fuhlendorf’s maritime history
The shipwreck JOHANNA lies on Fuhlendorf’s Bodden shore. The vessel was built in 1899 by D. W. Kremer in Elmshorn: a steel mizzen scow, also called a sailing scow, with a wooden bottom. It is 19.04 metres long and 4.77 metres wide; its tonnage is 38.00 GRT. These precise measurements give the historic vessel a tangible scale.
A public path leads through a small marshy woodland on the Bodden coast to the Bodden, offering a close-up view of the JOHANNA. Check local path conditions before your visit.
The maritime history goes beyond the wreck. The Dornquast boatyard was located on HafenstraĂźe in Fuhlendorf from 1885 until the early 1950s. Between 1871 and 1914, 40 sailboats were built in Fuhlendorf and 12 in Michaelsdorf. These figures reflect the boatbuilding tradition of both places; they do not describe the history of the Dornquast boatyard alone.
Puzzle stations on the nature trail
The main route of the Fuhlendorf nature trail is an approximately 2.2-kilometre circular walk through Fuhlendorf Forest. It includes seven stations, each with a hidden gemstone and a letter board that form part of a puzzle story. The “Puzzle Animals” extension, about 860 metres long, and the “Forest Eye” extension, about 800 metres long, offer additional route options. The different distances help you gauge the scope of the walk without specifying a walking time.
One station introduces the wolf, red fox, wild boar, red deer, roe deer and Eurasian jay. Visitors can discover animal tracks there and imitate the animals. The trail thus links its puzzle story with hands-on activities focused on wildlife. If you would rather make a maritime sight the focus of your visit, the JOHANNA offers a very different option.
Natural bathing spots and local orientation
Fuhlendorf has natural bathing spots with sunbathing lawns on HafenstraĂźe and Seegang. They offer another way to spend time outdoors alongside the forest walk. These two locations are a point of reference in their own right, separate from the themes of the nature trail and maritime history.
The Southern Bodden Coast Tourist Office in Fuhlendorf sells tickets for local guided walks, guided tours and municipal events. It also issues tourist fishing licences and fishing permits for inland and coastal waters. An information point with local maps is located at DorfstraĂźe/Alte DorfstraĂźe. These offices are especially useful if you would like to include a guided tour or a fishing permit in your plans.
Activities and culture across the municipality
The municipality of Fuhlendorf has an extensive network of cycle paths to neighbouring municipalities, connecting to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route. This cycling connection refers to the municipal area, not just the village of Fuhlendorf. Bodstedt harbour is also part of the municipality: it has a municipal harbour basin with jetties, guest moorings and a slipway.
In Bodstedt, within the municipality of Fuhlendorf, the Bodstedt Zeesboat Regatta traditionally takes place on the first weekend in September. It is considered the oldest event of its kind; the specific dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around the regatta, check the dates for the relevant year.
Fuhlendorf is also home to the non-profit cultural association K-Drei e.V. It was founded in 2018 on the southern Bodden coast in the municipality of Fuhlendorf and brings together the fields of cinema, art and communication. Its members include cultural professionals and people interested in culture from Fuhlendorf, Bodstedt, the surrounding region and Berlin. The association adds a cultural dimension to the nature and boatbuilding themes; this does not imply a public programme or regular visiting hours.
When choosing how to spend your stay, you can weigh up several distinct interests: the forest puzzle trail, natural bathing spots, the history of the JOHANNA and boatbuilding, or municipal activities involving cycling, the harbour and culture. This helps you get a sense of Fuhlendorf as a destination before choosing your accommodation.
