Prohn is located about 5 km north of Stralsund. Three distinct themes can help you decide where to stay: the loop trail around Prohn Reservoir, the seasonal stopover of migratory birds, and the history of the construction and furnishings of Prohn Church. This can help you decide whether a clearly defined walk, a spring or autumn travel date, or historic architecture should be the deciding factor for your trip.

Exploring Prohn Reservoir

The loop trail around Prohn Reservoir is 4.3 km long and takes about 1.5 hours. It begins and ends at Prohn Church. In between, the route follows Damitzer Weg, WitzlawstraĂźe, the dam, a field path, the bathing area, Damitz Harbour, and the hiking trail along the south side of the lake. The time estimate gives you a specific timeframe for the walk; check current trail conditions locally. Prohn also has a well-developed network of cycle paths, another local point of reference for planning your trip.

Landscape and migratory birds

Prohn lies on the edge of the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft Nature Reserve. In spring and autumn, cranes and other migratory birds stop for many weeks in the meadows and fields around Prohn and on Prohn Lake. If you want to make the birds’ stopover the focus of your visit, you can plan around these two seasons. Since the stopover lasts many weeks each time, it offers a seasonal window rather than a single date.

Prohn Church and local history room

The oldest part of Prohn Church is its square, Late Romanesque choir, built after 1250. The two-aisled, two-bay nave was built in the 14th century. During construction work from 1858 to 1862, Lübke had a tall Neo-Gothic tower with a pointed spire built in front of the existing tower stump. The different construction phases can thus be distinguished by the choir, nave and tower. “Two-aisled” refers to the two aisles in the nave; “two-bay” refers to its division into two bays.

The furnishings also reflect distinct periods: the oldest item is a rood cross group from the 15th century, now located above the modern altar table. Elias Kessler made the suspended, gilded baptismal angel in 1727/1728. The Prohn local history room is located in the community centre and is another local point of reference for visitors interested in the history of the village.

In the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-RĂĽgen

There are an estimated 60 museums in Vorpommern-Rügen district. The old town of the Hanseatic city of Stralsund is also part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Historic Centres of Stralsund and Wismar”. These details place Prohn in the wider cultural context of the Vorpommern-Rügen travel destination; Prohn itself is located about 5 km north of Stralsund.
