Zempin lies between the Baltic Sea and Achterwasser Lagoon, at or near the narrowest point of Usedom. Sand, dunes and steep coastline shape the beach; in the town, you’ll also find trails with different estimated walking times and houses with a fishing heritage. Coastal scenery, outdoor activities and the townscape give you several ways to shape a stay in Zempin on Usedom.

On foot: trails and how long they take

The signposted nature trail explores local nature, history, land and people. In addition, you can choose from three named hiking trails with different estimated durations. The green Alt Zempin Trail takes about 40 minutes. Allow about an hour and a half for the red Seebad Trail; the blue Great Circular Trail usually takes about 105 minutes. The green trail is therefore a much shorter option, while the two longer estimates are fairly close to each other. This can help you plan your day: choose a shorter walk or set aside more time for one of the longer routes. The nature trail offers a thematic focus, while the three other trails can be compared mainly by their walking times.

Fishermen’s houses and local history

Numerous thatched houses shape Zempin; most originated as old fishermen’s houses and are protected by local statute. Their architectural style keeps the town’s fishing heritage visible. The Uns olle Schaul community hall is another place to explore local history. It houses a small fishing museum and a colonial goods store dating from 1928. Together, the houses in the townscape and the two facilities in the community hall illustrate different aspects of the local heritage: the architecture, most of which originated as fishermen’s houses, and the fishing museum and historic store.

Coastal scenery, fishing and cycling

At the beach, you can look for amber or ask an amber fisherman where to find it. You can also watch fishermen at work in Zempin; fresh fish and fish sandwiches are among the options available locally. If you prefer to get around on two wheels, bicycle and e-bike rentals and guided tours are available. So, in addition to hiking, you can also choose from cycling options, without limiting your stay to just one way of getting around.

Getting here and planning your accommodation

Zempin is connected to the Usedom Bäderbahn rail network, and Zempin station is one of its stops. If you plan to travel by train, check the timetable for your travel date. When looking for a hotel in Zempin, you can first consider whether hiking trails, coastal scenery, fishing history or cycling will shape your stay. This helps you match your choice of destination to the activities that interest you locally.

Vorpommern-Greifswald: regional highlights

The wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald offers other regional highlights beyond Zempin. The Baltic Coast Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo Route EV10, passes through the district. The Stettiner Haff Circular Route and the Route of North German Romanticism are among the regional cycling routes for exploring the district. Trail surfaces and signs may change; check conditions before setting off on a bike ride.

Museums also offer a glimpse of other places in the district. The Juliett U-461 is a museum ship in Peenemünde harbour and can be explored on a tour. Check the current access rules before visiting. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation period.
