Trassenheide is shaped by an almost four-kilometre-long beach of fine sand. There are also trails through coastal forest and meadows, as well as excursion destinations with a variety of focuses: nature observation, water sports, play facilities and unusual perspectives. This lets you divide your stay between time at the beach and exploring, without every outing having to offer the same kind of experience.
Beach and Promenade
Trassenheide beach offers opportunities for play and sports. An extensive shallow-water area makes swimming especially enjoyable for families with children. From May to September, lifeguards from the German Life Saving Association provide safety at the main beach and at the stretch of beach by the “Ostseeblick” campsite. This seasonal presence applies to the beach sections mentioned.
The beach promenade also has a variety of areas: a sculpture park, a play area with an adventure playground, and a quiet zone. This places opportunities for activity alongside a quieter place to take a break. The sand sculpture exhibition “The World of Sand” is located at Wiesenweg 1 in Trassenheide and adds a dedicated exhibition to the public art on display.
Exploring on Foot and by Bike
Trassenheide is connected to Usedom Island’s network of cycling and hiking trails and can serve as a starting point for day trips around the island. Those looking for a guided tour can join Usedom-Reiseleitung’s island tours by bike, on foot or as a coach excursion. These tours can also include the surrounding mainland. Bicycles and e-bikes can be rented right in Trassenheide.
The nature around the village, with coastal forest and meadows towards the Peenestrom, is best explored on foot or by bicycle. For a tour with a defined duration, “Fiete’s Adventure Route through Trassenheide” is a useful option: the GPS-guided nature tour takes about two to three hours. A brochure designed for the route is available from the tourist information office or online. The designated Baltic Sea Coast Nature Trail in Trassenheide is on a different scale. It extends for about 60 kilometres, and 75 information panels provide information in German, English and Polish. These details illustrate two different ways to plan time on nature trails: a tour with an approximate duration specified, and a longer educational trail with information along the route.
Excursion Destinations for Different Interests
At “The World Upside Down,” visitors can explore a home turned upside down from an unusual perspective, an experience offered since 2008. Outdoor learning and adventure trails complement the visit with changing themed activities. This means the experience is not limited to the altered perspective inside the building.
Several attractions of different sizes offer play and adventure activities. Usedom Park “Kinderland” covers 10,000 square metres and features, among other things, a carousel, a train, a bouncy castle and a trampoline. Visitors can also climb a lighthouse and go on Western-themed rides. “Pirateninsel Usedom” is a 13,000-square-metre play and adventure park in Trassenheide. The two parks can be distinguished by their specific attractions and size.
The attraction “Europe’s Largest Butterfly Farm” offers a different focus. Its 2,600-square-metre free-flight hall is home to 1,500 to 2,000 butterflies from tropical regions. Here, you can observe the stages of development from egg to caterpillar and chrysalis to butterfly all year round. Those more interested in nature observation than in play and adventure activities will find a different kind of excursion here.
Water Sports at the Sports Beach
At Trassenheide’s sports beach, the Island Surf Usedom team offers introductory and multi-day courses in windsurfing, surfing and stand-up paddleboarding. The courses also include practice in changing course and performing various manoeuvres. The offer is seasonal; if a course is important to your plans, check the dates in advance. This makes it easy to plan an active day at the beach alongside walks, nature trails or local excursion destinations.
