Zerrenthin offers several distinct themes for a stay: the village church with its architectural and art history, cycling tours starting from Zerrenthin, and the Zerrenthiner Wiesen meadows in the surrounding area. This brings cultural history, outdoor activities and nature watching together. When choosing a holiday apartment, you can consider which of these themes you would like to shape your stay.

Village Church: Architectural History and Art

The village church in Zerrenthin is the largest and oldest church in the parish and dates from the 13th century. Its tower rises to about 46 metres and features a square wooden bell chamber and a pointed, copper-covered spire. A war memorial stands on the north side of the church.

The series of murals running around the walls probably dates from the first half of the 16th century. It was uncovered in 1970 and restored from 1994 to 1996. An old bell, cast by Martin Heintze in Berlin in 1681, formerly belonged to St. Mary’s Church in Pasewalk. Since 1997, it has rung in the village church in Zerrenthin as a permanent loan.

Services are held regularly in the village church; check the current times before visiting. Nearby, the small church in Wetzenow is a popular destination for special services held by the wider parish.

Zerrenthiner Wiesen: Moorland, Salt and Wading Birds

The Zerrenthiner Wiesen meadows lie in the surrounding area between Krugsdorf, Koblentz, Zerrenthin and Breitenstein. They are by far the largest of the five inland salt sites in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The moorland grassland is used for haymaking and grazing and is an important migratory and resting site for numerous wading birds. These include golden plovers, whimbrels, ruffs, Eurasian curlews and lapwings. Because of the sometimes high salt content, salt was extracted from the moor until as late as the 18th century.

Cycling Tours and Seasonal Produce

Well-maintained agricultural tracks starting from Zerrenthin make it possible to take extended cycling tours through the attractive surrounding area. The cycling tours start in Zerrenthin; the meadows are nearby. When planning your stay, you can therefore choose between focusing on cycling and exploring nature and landscape history.

The farm shop at Hof Bischoff in Zerrenthin offers seasonal products made from the slaughtering and processing of the farm’s animals, as well as produce from the garden. Check current availability in advance if you are planning to shop there.

In the wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald

The wider destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald also offers other cultural attractions in Greifswald and Anklam. The Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald displays the Croy Tapestry of 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. In Anklam, the Otto Lilienthal Museum is dedicated to aviation pioneer, mechanical engineer and humanist Otto Lilienthal in his home town. The region’s themes thus range from an artefact of the Reformation to a technical museum dedicated to a notable individual.
