At Lake Großer Koblentzer See, moorland and waterfowl resting areas take center stage; in Koblentz, the mausoleum of the Knights of Eickstedt tells its own story of construction and use. This lets you choose between two distinct interests: nature watching, with a seasonal focus, or cultural history spanning several historical periods.

Moorland and Protected Area

The Großer Koblentzer See Nature Reserve covers 269 hectares and lies between Krugsdorf and the municipality of Koblentz. Its protected habitats include an originally mesotrophic valley-moor pool, adjacent groundwater-fed fen areas, an inland salt site that is very rare in Western Pomerania, and a calcareous fen. The area is also of regional importance as a breeding, migratory and resting site for waterfowl.

The landscape also tells the story of its formation: Lake Großer Koblentzer See lies in a low-gradient side valley of the Randow lowlands, shaped by meltwater. During the Holocene, the valley became waterlogged and developed into a groundwater-fed fen, with individual mineral-soil ridges rising through it. The valley, moor and these ridges are therefore part of a landscape whose form developed over a long period.

Paths and Birdwatching

A path behind the old manor house in Koblentz leads to Lake Großer Koblentzer See. The path from Koblentz to Uhlenkrug runs directly past the nature reserve to the north. If you plan to use either of these paths, check the current conditions in advance: their condition, surface and signage may change.

Two observation hides on the southeastern shore of Lake Großer Koblentzer See offer views, especially in autumn, of geese and cranes arriving at dusk. Seasonal bird resting also features in guided walks offered to observe the geese and cranes that stop here in autumn. Dates may vary, so check them before making specific plans. The Koblentz lakes also offer opportunities to enjoy the sunset. Weather and time of year play a role.

The Mausoleum of the Knights of Eickstedt

The present-day church building in Koblentz was originally built as a mausoleum for the von Eickstedt family. Friedrich Hitzig, a student of Schinkel, built it in 1853–1854 in the Late Neoclassical style as a resting place for the Knights of Eickstedt. From around 1897 to 2013, the mausoleum was used as a village church. The building’s construction, original purpose and later use provide a clearly traceable historical sequence.

Birdwatching is the distinctly seasonal factor when choosing when to travel: geese and cranes stop here in autumn, and the observation hides offer views, especially in the evening, of their arrival. The mausoleum’s construction and history of use, by contrast, make it a cultural-history highlight. You can therefore plan your trip around whether autumn nature watching or the history of the building is more important to you.
