Thirteenth-century fieldstone churches and the cultural projects at Bröllin Castle give Fahrenwalde a distinct profile for a trip focused on architectural history and art. Bröllin is a district of Fahrenwalde; here, medieval architectural features, estate history and artistic uses come together. Fahrenwalde itself has another church from the same period. This makes it possible to get to know the town through tangible traces of architecture and culture.

Comparing the Fieldstone Churches

Fahrenwalde Church is a fieldstone building dating from the 13th century. Its massive proportions make the building look like a fortress. Bröllin Church also dates from the 13th century, but it is a small fieldstone church. Its choir is set back; the medieval roof structure and medieval bricks in the chancel add to the picture of its architectural history. The churches share the same date, but their described forms create different impressions: one has a fortress-like appearance, while the other is compact, with a set-back choir.

Details of Bröllin Church’s furnishings include two paintings depicting very different scenes. A small cabinet painting in a leaded-glass window shows a gentleman offering a lady a glass of wine. The large altarpiece depicts Jesus and Peter sinking into the water. The church also has a bronze bell cast by Voss, with a diameter of 72 centimetres.

The town’s history extends beyond its church buildings. The cemetery beside Bröllin Church contains numerous graves belonging to the Stoewahs estate-owner family. The family was associated with the church from 1850 to 1945. This time span gives this part of local history a clear historical framework.

Bröllin Castle: Estate History and Culture

Bröllin Castle is a historic estate. Friedrichshof Estate provides another trace of the area’s estate history: it was established as a dependency, or outlying estate, of the Bröllin manor. It was first mentioned in an official document in 1745 in connection with the owner of the main estate, Johann Gottfried Prüwer, lord of the manor and court. The date refers to this documentary mention, not to the year it was founded.

The historic grounds of Bröllin Castle offer suitable spaces and areas for dance, theatre, circus, visual arts, music, literature and youth projects; projects of these kinds take place there. The Detect Classic Festival has been held at Bröllin Castle since 2022. Alongside the estate’s history, artistic projects and a festival are therefore distinct aspects of the place.

Rooms and facilities for workshops, team retreats, conferences, seminars and yoga weekends are available by reservation. If you would like to plan your stay around the Detect Classic Festival, check the current dates in advance. A reservation is required for any of the group formats.
