Loitz combines a short walk through the historic old town with the L3 nature experience combination tour, which brings together hiking and paddling on the route to Zeitlow. The town is also home to St. Mary's Church and the old railway station, both historic buildings. This gives visitors a choice of different focuses for their stay: local history and a guided activity offering two ways to get around.

Old town and historic buildings

A short walk through the historic old town takes you to its sights. St. Mary's Church is a church building dating from the 13th century; its furnishings include a library donated by the duchess in 1621. Loitz's old railway station dates from 1906 and has recently been restored. The church and station represent different periods: from medieval building history to the early 20th century, complemented by the history of the library's endowment.

Hiking and paddling on the L3

The L3 nature experience combination tour consists of a canoe trip and a hike, each lasting about two hours. While one group hikes from Loitz to Zeitlow, the other group paddles to the same destination; the groups then switch. This brings two ways of getting around together in one shared itinerary, rather than offering only a hike or a canoe trip.

Nature park rangers lead the hiking group; guides from the Loitz Canoe Station accompany the paddling group. Route arrangements may depend on the booking. So check the specific tour itinerary in advance.

Rental options in Loitz

Rental options are also available in Loitz independently of the L3. At the harbour, e-bikes can be rented by the day, for a weekend or, if needed, for longer. Canoes are available to rent at the Loitz marina. E-bike rental periods can therefore range from a single day to longer periods; availability and rental conditions may change, so check both when planning your trip.

The Peene landscape and Vorpommern-Greifswald

The Peene provides a broader landscape setting within the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald. It is also known as the “Amazon of the North” and is one of Germany's last unaltered rivers. The Peene floodplain covers around 20,000 hectares and is one of the largest contiguous lowland moor areas in Central and Western Europe. The Peene Valley is also known for its extensive otter and beaver populations.

The nearby Zeitlow waterway rest area lies southwest of Loitz. From the rest area, you can look out over the Peene; otters have already been spotted right there. These observations add a specific place to the landscape picture without promising sightings.

The wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald also offers other nature and culture topics: the UeckermĂĽnde Heath is ideal for hiking, cycling and horseback riding. In Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical testament from the Reformation era. This lets you distinguish Loitz's local history and L3 from other interests in the district.
