Plöwen combines a strong connection to nature with activities by the water and traces from different eras. Plöwensches Seebruch is known for its wetland habitats and opportunities for nature watching; Kutzowsee offers additional opportunities for swimming, leisure and relaxation. The village church and historic ramparts provide a glimpse into different periods of the town’s history. The village is also part of the supra-regional Oder-Neiße cycle route network, making it a destination for cyclists.

Seebruch and Kutzowsee

Plöwensches Seebruch lies west of Plöwen and north of the B 104, at an elevation of 8 to 14 metres above sea level. Extensive reed beds, alder carr forests and other wetland habitats characterise this natural landscape. Plöwen’s wooded surroundings by the Seebruch offer conditions for hiking, nature watching and birdwatching. Those wishing to focus on landscapes and birdlife will find a different connection to nature here than in the activities on offer by the water.

The 20-hectare Kutzowsee lies near Plöwen and offers opportunities for swimming, leisure and relaxation. The bathing area has a sunbathing lawn and a bathing jetty. A nature trail for birdwatchers runs around the lake. This allows swimming and nature watching to be enjoyed as different activities at the same lake: the bathing area provides space to spend time by the water, while the circular trail is geared towards birdwatching.

Local history and historic traces

Plöwen originated between the 2nd and 4th centuries. The village church is a fieldstone hall church built at the end of the 13th century. The name combines two clues: “fieldstone” refers to the building material, while “hall church” describes the architectural form. This architectural classification adds another perspective on the church alongside its age. A rampart at Hühnerwinkel bears witness to Slavic settlement in the area in the 8th or 9th century. These dates highlight different aspects: the origins of the village, settlement traces from later centuries and the medieval church building.

The castle ramparts on the northwest side of the nature reserve are another point of interest for history enthusiasts. They can be reached from Löcknitz via a forest footpath. This route provides a concrete way to visit the castle ramparts and complements the local history, with the village church and the rampart at Hühnerwinkel providing further historical points of reference.

Cycling and the wider regional context

Plöwen is part of the supra-regional Oder-Neiße cycle route network. The Oder-Neiße Cycle Route runs from the source of the Neisse in the Czech Republic to the Baltic Sea; you can join it at any point. This means that local routes for a stay are complemented by a cycle route with a supra-regional reach. These are different scales to consider when planning your trip: Plöwen offers nature, lake and history themes locally, while the cycle route opens up a perspective beyond the village itself.

In the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district’s area. This gives Plöwen’s nature themes a broader regional context without equating the distinctive landscapes of the Seebruch with the district as a whole.
