Blankensee is located in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, surrounded by extensive forests, meadows and fields. The entire municipality is part of the Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park. This offers several ways to plan your trip: explore the area by bike, enjoy different activities at the two lakes, or learn about the long history of the village church.

Obersee and Untersee: Swimming or Fishing

Obersee is about one kilometre from Blankensee and is considered suitable for swimming because of its water quality. As swimming conditions can vary seasonally, it is advisable to check them before your visit. Untersee offers something different: it is considered rich in fish and suitable for fishing. The two lakes therefore suit different activities you may have planned—Obersee is for swimming, while Untersee is for fishing. This makes the lakes different parts of a stay, without requiring you to use both in the same way.

Cycling around Blankensee

Cycling routes lead north, south and east from Blankensee. The Oder-Neiße Cycle Route also passes through the village. On its regional route, it connects Löcknitz, Blankensee and Ueckermünde; the route is mostly paved and flat. You can choose between routes heading in different directions and the long-distance cycle route. Before setting off, check local route and surface conditions, as routes and surfaces may change.

Overnight accommodation is available in Blankensee for cyclists. If you plan to stay in the village, check prices and availability before booking.

Blankensee Church: History and Building Phases

Blankensee Church is more than 500 years old. In 1732, under the patronage of the Stolzenburg estate, it became a mother church. Its tower was added in 1777 and later received a copper roof and a gilded weathercock. An eastern section of Blankensee village church dating from around 1500 is also documented; in 1777, the building was extended westwards. The building history therefore includes an older eastern section and changes made in the 18th century. Its status as a mother church, its patronage and its architectural development are distinct aspects of the village’s history, offering several points of interest for visitors interested in cultural history.

Another Cultural Connection

The KunstKiosk adds a more recent cultural connection to these historical themes: it was created as part of an art project carried out in 2013. Together with the old village church, its history shows that Blankensee can be described both through its long architectural history and through a specific art project from more recent times. When planning your stay, you can combine these local attractions with cycling or one of the different activities at Obersee and Untersee.
