Hinrichshagen is set in a quiet, natural, agricultural landscape of fields and meadows. At the same time, the village is right on the doorstep of Greifswald. For planning your trip, the development of the settlement and the cycling route between Dersekow and Hinrichshagen offer two distinct focal points.
The history of the settlement
At the beginning of the 13th century, the forests and marshlands north and south of the Ryck belonged to Eldena Monastery. The settlement of Hinrichshagen was established as these areas were cleared and drained. The village was first mentioned in a document in 1248 under the name “Henrikeshaghen”. The settlement’s founding and its first written mention mark different stages in its early history.
In 1668, Hinrichshagen became the property of the University of Greifswald. Another turning point came in 1932: the Freischulzenhof estate was divided into 32 leasehold farms. They formed the basis for the Chaussee, Heimsiedlung, and Feldsiedlung settlements. Their names show how this period shaped the settlement structure, which has remained almost unchanged to this day.
The manor house is also associated with different periods in the village’s history. During the Nazi era, it served as a Reichswerkschule and a Landjahrlager. In 1965, an Evangelical children’s home opened in the former manor house. The historical information about the building thus relates to distinctly different periods.

Vorpommern-Greifswald as a broader setting
In the wider travel destination of Vorpommern-Greifswald, the Pomeranian State Museum in Greifswald offers another cultural and historical highlight. It displays the Croy Tapestry from 1554, a unique cultural and historical artefact from the Reformation era. This regional perspective complements Hinrichshagen’s local history with a distinct subject from the history of the Reformation.
Cyclists can also explore regional routes in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald. The Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district. The Stettiner Haff Circuit and the Northern German Romanticism Route are among the regional cycling routes for exploring the district. They differ in scale from the 3.4-kilometre section between Dersekow and Hinrichshagen. Before setting out on a specific tour, check the current route and signage.
