Luckow is located in the Ueckermünde Heath. In the village district of Rieth, village life meets waterside scenery: the fishing village lies on the southern shore of Lake Neuwarper, right on the Polish border, and is surrounded by woodland and water. Lake Neuwarper is a bay on the southern coast of the Szczecin Lagoon; two narrow passages connect it to the lagoon. These geographical features give the destination a clear focus on landscape and nature.

Water, protected areas and trails

Lake Neuwarper and Riether Werder are an important breeding and resting area for waterbirds. At the same time, access to Riether Werder is clearly restricted: it is not open to the public. A cycling and hiking trail runs from Rehhagen to Rieth along the edge of the protected area. This makes it easy to distinguish information about protected nature from details of the trail when planning your time outdoors.

The rest of the landscape can also be explored on trails. Luckow’s cycling and hiking trails pass through landscapes of mixed and pine forests, fields and meadows. In the Ueckermünde Heath, hiking, cycling and horse riding are among the activities offered by the wider destination. These different activities give you the flexibility to shape your stay around the things that interest you, without requiring you to follow a particular route.

Half-timbered church and local history

If you would like to get to know the local character as well as the landscape, Luckow has a half-timbered church. It is listed as a local attraction and protected as a cultural monument. Rieth also has a small room dedicated to local history. The church and history room provide distinct points of interest alongside the natural surroundings: one is a named building in the village, while the other is devoted to local history.

These different points of interest can help you choose accommodation in Luckow. You can consider whether you would like to focus your stay on trails and landscapes, on the places themselves, or on both. Nature and culture sit side by side here; no particular order or set itinerary is prescribed.

Garden visit and seasonal highlight

Another garden attraction is the private Christiansberg Show Garden. It covers an area of 30,000 square metres and has been expanded since 1982. Its areas include a pond, a shade garden, a peony garden, a heath garden and an alpine garden. It has been open year-round to garden and nature lovers since 1994. It offers a distinct focus on landscaped garden areas alongside the open countryside.

A walk passes the Christiansberg Botanical Garden and offers views of Lake Neuwarper. A particular time of year is especially interesting for the magnolia collection: in early May, the magnolia garden showcases around 100 varieties. If you would like to make this seasonal highlight the focus of your visit, you can plan around this period; for visits with a different focus, the garden’s other areas are worth exploring.

Luckow within the wider destination

The regional context is also useful: in the wider Vorpommern-Greifswald destination, the three nature parks cover almost 40 percent of the district. The Ueckermünde Heath is one of the landscapes that invite visitors to hike, cycle and ride. Several regional routes are also available for cycling trips through the district: the Baltic Sea Cycle Route, part of the EuroVelo EV10 route, passes through the district; the Szczecin Lagoon Circular Route and the North German Romanticism Route are other cycling routes for exploring Vorpommern-Greifswald. Check current route conditions and signage before setting out on a specific trip.

Luckow is therefore a straightforward starting point for deciding whether to include a landscape of woodland, water and protected areas, local culture, garden areas, or a combination of these in your stay.
