Buggenhagen combines Buggenhagen Castle with the Till Richter Museum and the Klotzow Nature Trail. There is also a hiking route and a cycling route, each including the town in a different way. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether to focus on the castle’s history and contemporary art, or on nature and outdoor activities.
Buggenhagen Castle and Contemporary Art
Buggenhagen Castle was built around 1840 as a Neoclassical manor house, inspired by buildings on Pariser Platz in Berlin. It was once the ancestral home of the von Buggenhagen family. After a lengthy period of disuse, the castle became home to the Till Richter Museum of Contemporary Art.
The collection comprises several hundred works in all media by more than 100 artists from Europe, America and Asia. The history of the manor house thus meets a collection of international artistic origins. The annual “Rising Stars Residency” is also part of this focus on art. The museum invites one to three artists to work individually or together for three months, from mid-May to mid-August. The resulting works are exhibited in the museum’s main rooms from August to January. The work and exhibition periods therefore overlap in August.
Park and Nature Trail
Buggenhagen Castle is set in a seven-hectare park with a lake. The Klotzow Nature Trail offers another way to experience nature: it is accessible to all age groups and has been open to local residents and tourists since September 2024. Seven information boards cover the water source, peatland rewetting, and native trees and birds. While the castle and museum focus on architecture and art, the boards draw attention to water, peatland and native species.
Hiking or Cycling?
The “Lassaner Winkel” hiking route runs from Lassan through Buggenhagen to the Großer Moor. The hike takes you to Buggenhagen Castle; a footpath passes to the right of the castle, through the castle park and onward to nearby Jamitzow. The route description may change when it is revised. Check the current route details before setting out.
For cyclists, Route 4, “Lassaner Winkel,” in the cycling brochure includes Buggenhagen Manor House among its destinations. The brochure was published in 2013; check the current route network before setting off. The two descriptions have different focuses: the hiking route lists a sequence through Lassan, Buggenhagen and the Großer Moor, while the cycling route includes the manor house as one of its destinations.
