Radegast combines local history with regional cycling routes. Berendshagen Church reflects the local history of architecture and restoration; the Gutshaus circular route and the “Satower Land” cycling tour take cyclists through or towards the village. Radegast is documented in records dating back to 1224. The Radegast district also includes Berendshagen, Dolglas, Miekenhagen, Pustohl, Sophienholz and Steinhagen. This gives you two different themes to focus on when planning your trip: historic buildings and local history, or the village’s connections to regional cycling routes.

Berendshagen Church: Building History and Bell

Berendshagen Church is a brick church. Its construction is dated to either the 13th or the 15th century; both dates remain possible alternatives. A burial chapel stands in the cemetery beside the church. The bell also has its own history: it was cast in 1893 and hangs in a separate bell tower in the cemetery grounds.

Restoration work on the church began after the television documentary “Village Churches in Need” drew attention to its structural decay. After the work was completed, the church was rededicated in 2002 at a large community celebration. Its history of construction thus combines an uncertain date of origin with later events that are precisely dated.

In 2024, Berendshagen Church, its cemetery, the mausoleum and the war memorial were protected as listed monuments. This adds another aspect to the architectural details for anyone interested in the history of the church and the village.

Cycling Routes Through and Towards Radegast

The Gutshaus circular route takes cyclists from Satow towards Radegast via Miekenhäger Weg. In Radegast, it continues towards Miekenhagen and Horst before rejoining the Gutshaus circular route. The “Satower Land” cycling tour passes through Radegast, Steinhagen and Rosenhagen on its way to Gerdshagen. Just before Radegast, cyclists turn right onto Steinhäger Weg and follow it for about 3.3 kilometres.

The two route descriptions help with different planning questions: the Gutshaus circular route focuses on directions and the route back to the circular trail. The description of the “Satower Land” tour also names the places along the way and gives an approximate distance along Steinhäger Weg. This lets you choose the route information that suits you, depending on whether you mainly need the route or also want to take a specific section into account.

Bus Services and Cultural Events

Regional bus route 102 serves the stops “Radegast”, “Radegast, Mosterei” and “Radegast, Neubau” in Radegast, as well as Berendshagen. As timetables can change, check departure times before travelling.

The open-air stage at Radegast sports ground hosts a range of cultural events. If you would like to combine your stay with an event, check the date separately for your preferred day.

Satow as the Wider Travel Destination

Within the wider travel destination of Satow, Satower See is located in the village of Satow and covers 6.8 hectares. Paddle boats and stand-up paddleboards are permitted on the lake; check the local rules before using them. A nature trail runs around the lake and is suitable for walks, hikes and outings with the whole family. Rest areas, along with stations and information boards about local wildlife, plant life and regional history, bring together nature and culture along the trail. There is a well-maintained bathing area with a beach on the north shore.

Old Satow Church is also a historic landmark within the wider travel destination of Satow. The 13th-century monastery church ruin, regarded as a local landmark, lies in the middle of a park and defines the village centre. Old Satow Church was built between 1219 and 1224 in a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic architecture and is one of the oldest buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The old cemetery around the church ruin has a park-like character and provides a setting for a variety of cultural activities.
