The district of Bölkow is predominantly agricultural and covers 27 km². The Gut Hohen Luckow estate is located within the district, with an 18th-century Baroque Schloss, farm buildings and a landscaped park. The agricultural landscape characterises the district as a whole; the estate provides a specific cultural point of reference. If you would like to weigh landscape and architectural history separately when deciding on your trip, you can use these two perspectives as a guide.
Gut Hohen Luckow: Architectural Ensemble and Summer Programme
The Gut Hohen Luckow estate comprises more than the Baroque Schloss: the farm buildings and landscaped park are part of it too. The Schloss dates from the 18th century. This means you can consider its cultural focus as an ensemble, rather than just as an individual building. Cultural events take place in the Knights’ Hall at Hohen Luckow during the summer months. This offers two different ways to plan: you can make Hohen Luckow a historical focus, or, if an event is the reason for your visit, plan your travel dates around the specific event. Check the individual event dates in advance. Not every trip needs to coincide with an event; the estate also offers its own cultural point of reference through its buildings and park.
In Satow: Lake, Trails and History
The wider destination of Satow also offers attractions focused on the water and local history. Satower See is in the village of Satow and covers 6.8 hectares. Paddle boats and stand-up paddleboards are permitted on the lake; check the local rules before taking part. The Spiel- und Erlebnispfad (Play and Adventure Trail) runs around Satower See. It is suitable for walks, hikes and family outings and has rest areas. Stops and information boards provide details about local wildlife and plant life, as well as the region’s history. The options are therefore clearly distinct: on the water, permitted paddling and SUP activities take centre stage, while the trail combines exercise with places to rest and information about nature and history.
A well-maintained swimming area with a beach is located on the north shore of Satower See. If you are planning a visit, check its condition in advance.
Satow also offers a focus on cultural history. The 13th-century ruined monastery church, regarded as a local landmark, is set amid a park and defines the village centre. The old cemetery surrounding the church ruins has a park-like character and provides a setting for a range of cultural activities. Satow’s old church was built between 1219 and 1224 in a transitional style between Romanesque and Gothic and is one of the oldest buildings in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Since 1945, Satow Church has been shared by Protestant and Catholic Christians. The transitional style describes architecture between two periods: the church is classified as neither exclusively Romanesque nor solely Gothic.
