The 10.9-kilometre Thalasso Health Trail 5 is a circular hiking route that is also suitable for cycling. The trail is accessible, signposted and connected to public transport; there is also somewhere to stop for refreshments. The route runs via Stuthofer Schneise into the Rostock Heath and continues towards Schnatermann. Its length and circular layout give you specific details for planning your outing.

Hiking, cycling and nature at Schnatermann

The traditional Schnatermann inn, Schnatermann 1, 18146 Rostock-Stuthof, is a place to stop for refreshments after a hike or cycle ride through the Rostock Heath. Its beer garden is open seasonally, so a stop there also depends on the time of year.

The nearby Schnatermann Nature Reserve offers a different perspective on the area: protected and endangered species can be found there, including the black woodpecker, hobby and lily of the valley. There are also views of the Warnow estuary, known locally as the Breitling. The species found here and the landscape views offer two different points of interest for nature lovers. In the wider Rostock destination, beaches stretch along the Baltic coast from Warnemünde and Diedrichshagen to Hohe Düne and Markgrafenheide.

Rostock as the wider destination

The wider Rostock destination also offers its own historical and cultural perspective. Rostock has a history spanning more than 800 years, is one of the Baltic’s historic Hanseatic cities and was once an important trading centre in northern Germany. A walking tour of Rostock’s historic centre takes you past, among other places, Universitätsplatz, the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Kröpeliner Straße, as well as to Neuer Markt and St. Mary’s Church. It offers insights into architecture, urban development and Hanseatic traditions. City paddling offers a different perspective on Rostock: explore the city without a motor and get to know the Warnow biotope.

A shorter route option in the wider Rostock destination is the “Biological Diversity” circular trail in the Rostock Heath. It is 2.8 kilometres long, has limited accessibility and includes ten stops; the start and finish are at Forst- und Köhlerhof Wiethagen. Compared with the 10.9-kilometre Thalasso Health Trail, it is the shorter route. The route length and accessibility designation are separate planning considerations. Check current trail conditions before setting out.

Rostock’s cultural attractions also have their own distinct focus. The Rostock Museum of Cultural History displays historic furniture, old paintings, city maps and finds from trade and crafts across around 2,000 square metres. For views across the city and coast, the platform at Warnemünde Lighthouse offers views of the Baltic Sea, harbour and seaside resort; it can be reached via a spiral staircase. You can reach the viewing level of St. Peter’s Church by lift or by climbing 197 steps. Check the current information from the relevant operator before visiting.
