The Sunflower House in Rostock-Lichtenhagen is now considered a symbol of the racist violence of late summer 1992. Art also provides a way to express this remembrance: the artwork “Yesterday Today Tomorrow” comprises five figures made of Laas marble, each addressing an aspect of the 1992 Rostock-Lichtenhagen pogrom. The Sunflower House is one of five proposed locations for this multi-part artwork.

Fountains and green spaces in the district

Lichtenhäger Brink is now the centre of the district. The Farmers’ Fountain has stood in the southern part of the Brink since 1978 and is one of the district’s landmarks. The pedestrian zone at Lichtenhäger Brink features seven fountains under the name “Life in Water”. The complex was designed as a meeting point and central gathering place. The southern area of Lichtenhäger Brink also includes an eastern courtyard with a playground and a ball court.

Another connection between green space and art in Lichtenhagen is the protected main green space of the residential area. It includes a multi-part fountain complex, as well as several sculptures, and is a listed monument. A roughly 600-metre, one-hour walk tells the story of how this area came to be.

Remembrance and routes through the district

The interactive city tour “Lichtenhagen in Memory” incorporates original historical documents and follows the six steles of the “Yesterday Today Tomorrow” monument, passing various historical and symbolic locations in the Hanseatic city of Rostock. Check the latest information on offers and bookings before planning your tour.

The two formats have different focuses: the one-hour walk explores the creation of the green space; the interactive city tour follows the steles to historical and symbolic locations in Rostock.

For getting around the district, RSAG tram line 5 is a useful reference: it connects SĂĽdblick with Mecklenburger Allee in Lichtenhagen. Check the current timetable for your travel date, as routes and construction-related diversions can change.

A different cultural focus

The Loc Uyen Temple in Lichtenhagen is a Buddhist centre for worship and education. Its temple garden offers visitors and residents of Lichtenhagen a place to rest and meditate. The temple and garden therefore offer a different focus from commemorative art and fountains: faith, education, peace and meditation.

Rostock as a historical point of reference

Rostock also offers its own historical highlights: the Hanseatic city on the Baltic Sea has a history spanning more than 800 years and was once an important trading centre in northern Germany. The tour through Rostock’s historic centre passes, among other places, Universitätsplatz, the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Kröpeliner Straße, as well as Neuer Markt and St Mary’s Church. It offers insights into architecture, urban development and Hanseatic traditions. The Cultural History Museum Rostock displays historical furniture, old paintings, city maps and finds from trade and crafts across around 2,000 square metres.
