A nature trail, an early Slavic hilltop castle and the village church give Thelkow several points of interest for a stay. There is also the “To Lieper Castle” hike, the megalithic tombs near Liepen and Kuhlensee, a bathing lake on the northern edge of the village. Nature, architectural history and swimming are thus presented as distinct themes. For planning your day, the hike in particular provides a concrete, albeit approximate, timeframe.

Hiking to Lieper Castle and Teufelssee

The nature trail leads through Thelkow to Lieper Castle and Teufelssee, offering opportunities for hiking and relaxation. For a route with specific details, the nearby “To Lieper Castle” hike is an option: it starts in Liepen, follows forest and meadow paths to Lieper Castle and Teufelssee, and returns to Liepen. The route is 7.6 kilometres long and takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes on foot. It is an easy to moderate hike on flat to gently rolling terrain.

From the B110, the route from the direction of Tessin and Vilz runs through Thelkow and onward to Liepen. When planning your day, you can use the starting point in Liepen and the approximate walking time as key details. This makes clear how much time to allow for the hike itself.

Village Church and Lieper Castle: Two Historical Periods

The Thelkow village church is a fieldstone building that incorporates some brickwork. It was built around 1260 to 1280, placing it in the transitional period between the Romanesque and Gothic styles. Notable features include the richly articulated south portal, star rosettes and a keystone depicting the Lamb of God. The materials, approximate construction date and ornamentation offer different ways to appreciate the building; the portal and keystone add striking details to its stylistic context.

Lieper Castle represents a different historical period. This early Slavic hilltop castle dates from the 8th century and is located in the municipality of Thelkow. It is also part of the Lieper Burg Landscape Protection Area. Comparing its date with that of the church sets two distinct historical reference points side by side: the hilltop castle from the 8th century and the church building from the 13th century.

Megalithic Tombs near Liepen

The megalithic tombs on the Recknitz near Liepen date from 3500 to 2800 BCE and are among the best-preserved structures of the Late Neolithic. Information boards explain how the structures were built and describe the way of life of the first farmers and livestock breeders to settle there. The focus is therefore not solely on the tombs themselves: the information connects their construction with the lives of early settlers, adding a much earlier period to the historical themes around Thelkow.

Kuhlensee on the Northern Edge of the Village

Kuhlensee is the bathing lake for the municipality of Thelkow and lies on the northern edge of the village. If swimming is part of your stay, check the current bathing season before your trip.
