Selpin offers several different starting points for planning a trip: the “Steinreiches ParkLand” cycling tour includes the village in its route, and Selpin Manor House tells a story of two construction phases. It was built around 1751 and remodelled in 1850. Together, the cycling route and the manor house’s history provide a concrete introduction to the destination’s themes.

Cycling Tour and Former Railway Line

The “Steinreiches ParkLand” cycling tour is 25 kilometres long. A former sugar beet railway line also runs south of Selpin. Sugar beets were transported on it by rail carts to the sugar factory in Tessin. The two routes tell different stories: the cycling tour includes Selpin in its route, while the former railway line represents historical freight transport. This distinction helps visitors understand the area’s cycling route and a specific trace of its economic and transport history.

Manor Houses and Parkland in the Municipality

Further garden and park themes can be found in the municipality of Selpin, for example in Wesselstorf. Wesselstorf Manor House has gardens with old fruit varieties and a partly restored park with a valuable collection of mature trees, including many exotic species. In the manor park, a vista runs from the south side of the house over the pond to a rise called Schlossberg. The house, pond and rise thus form a continuous view.

The Wolkengarten in Wesselstorf also has its own history: it was created from a former goose pasture and is being continually developed. Cultural events are held at the manor house at irregular intervals, including open gardens, concerts, readings and exhibitions. Since there is no fixed event schedule, it is a good idea to check for suitable dates before travelling.

History in Woltow and the Surrounding Area

In Woltow, also in the municipality of Selpin, the inner park area covers about 8 hectares and is an archaeological monument. The moat and rampart of the old Slavic castle complex are still clearly visible. The manor house in Woltow also stands on an old Slavic castle complex; it has been falling into ruin since 1990.

The Griever Holz nature reserve offers another connection with nature nearby. It is a wooded area inhabited by, among others, foxes, hares, fire-bellied toads, white-tailed eagles and cranes. Cultural themes offer a different focus: at the Wossidlo House, visitors can follow in the footsteps of Richard Wossidlo, regarded as the founder of Mecklenburg folklore studies. The cycling tour also leads to Friedrichshof, considered Wossidlo’s birthplace. The two connections are distinct: the Wossidlo House focuses on his legacy, while Friedrichshof is associated with his origins.

More Themes in the Wider Rostock Destination

The wider Rostock destination also encompasses distinctive nature and cultural themes. Sternberg Lake District Nature Park, with its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, hills and extensive forests, is particularly popular for hiking and cycling. Another highlight is the historic Molli narrow-gauge railway, which runs between KĂĽhlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. The range of themes in the wider Rostock destination thus extends from nature park landscapes to historic rail transport.
