The former terminus of the northern branch of the beet railway is in Gnewitz. At the station, a horse and cart illustrate how sugar beets were transported from the fields to the loading point and tipped from the ramp into open wooden wagons. The narrow-gauge network covered about 45 kilometres and ran from Tessin to places including Gnewitz. The process, from field to ramp to wagon, makes the railway’s former transport role tangible.
Beet Railway and Cycling Route
The “Rübenbahntour Nord” cycling route stops at the Gnewitz loading point as its fourth station. It runs mainly along well-maintained cycle paths or quiet roads and is suitable for children. The route’s appeal to cyclists is clear: the loading point gives it a local historical connection, while the path conditions and suitability for children characterize the tour as a whole.
Walking Between the Village Pond and Megalithic Tombs
On foot, Gnewitz offers a variety of routes. One walk leads through the village to the village pond at its outskirts and towards the Recknitz Valley. The “From Zarnewanz to the Megalithic Tombs” route passes through the forest to Gnewitz and then continues a short distance beyond Neu Gnewitz to several megalithic tombs. The Gnewitz megalithic tomb is also a heritage site and an attraction. The first walk focuses on the village pond and the direction of the valley, while the second follows a forest path to several tombs.
More Local Highlights
At Am Park 4, there is a manor house and a park, another local facet alongside the beet railway’s history. The protection of bird habitats is also part of the picture: the EU bird sanctuary “Recknitz and Trebel Valleys with Side Valleys and Open Countryside” includes, among other areas, the municipality of Gnewitz in the Tessin administrative district.
In the Wider Rostock Destination
The wider Rostock destination offers further cultural and scenic highlights. At Wildpark-MV, you can explore the park on your own or join guided wolf, owl and evening walks. Sternberger Seenland Nature Park, with its deeply incised breakthrough valleys along the Warnow, numerous lakes, picturesque hills and extensive forests, is particularly inviting for walking and cycling. The Wolhynian Resettlers Museum in Linstow offers guided tours for groups and individuals. Using ethnographic objects, photos and documents, the tours tell the story of the Volhynian Germans from the mid-19th century until their resettlement in Mecklenburg after the Second World War. The historic Molli narrow-gauge railway runs between KĂĽhlungsborn and Bad Doberan and is the oldest narrow-gauge railway on the Baltic coast. It offers a different railway connection from the former goods railway terminus in Gnewitz. Buses and trains operate in the Rostock district as part of the regional transport network; with one ticket, holidaymakers can travel throughout the region, including the Hanseatic and university city of Rostock.
