Gelbensande Hunting Lodge gives the town a distinct cultural and historical focus: the building connects the history of the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg with a deliberately designed relationship to the landscape. Local history from the Second World War is also represented by memorial sites, while cycling and walking trails across the municipality offer a different perspective. This gives you distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: culture, remembrance and routes around the municipality.

Hunting Lodge and Courtly History

The hunting lodge was built from 1885 to 1887 as a summer residence for the Grand Dukes of Mecklenburg. Court architect Gotthilf Ludwig Möckel designed the building on behalf of Friedrich Franz III and his wife Anastasia Mikhailovna, a granddaughter of Russian Tsar Nicholas I. The history of the lodge can therefore be linked to both its construction and the people who commissioned it.

The lodge was also the childhood home of Cecilie, the last German Crown Princess, and Alexandrine, Queen of Denmark. This family history adds two remarkable life stories to the picture of the residence. The landscape was also part of the design: the building was deliberately constructed in a clearing so that the forest and wildlife would form part of the setting. The lodge and its surroundings are thus connected in a way that goes beyond architecture alone.

Museum, Tour and Weddings

The reception floor serves as a museum and cultural venue. A tour takes you through twelve living rooms featuring magnificent fireplaces and technical details. The rooms offer specific points of interest, allowing you to explore not only the house's courtly function but also its furnishings.

The reception floor also serves as a wedding venue. If you are considering holding a wedding there, confirm current availability before making concrete plans.

Local History and Remembrance

The military hospital cemetery at Gelbensande Hunting Lodge is located in Gelbensande at Am Jagdschloss 5 and is now a war cemetery. The cemetery holds 53 dead in individual graves and five in collective graves. A memorial in Gelbensande commemorates five Polish forced labourers who were buried in a makeshift grave outside the municipal cemetery in Gelbensande in 1945.

Another event in the town's history took place on 1 May 1945: an auxiliary hospital was set up in the unused princely residence near the hunting lodge after around 750 wounded people had been unloaded from two trains evacuated from Pomerania. Together, these memorial sites and events point to different aspects of wartime Gelbensande.

Forest, Trails and Other Buildings

Within the municipality of Gelbensande, the adjoining woodland areas are linked by an extensive network of cycling and walking trails. Along the B105, the network connects to the Baltic Sea Cycle Route; forest trails also link to the Fischland-DarĂź-Zingst area. Hiking maps displayed throughout the municipality help visitors enjoy walks while learning about the area. Check current trail conditions when choosing a specific route.

Other buildings also add to the town's history. The former Grand Ducal Forestry Inspectorate in Gelbensande was built after 1877. To the west of the town stands Gelbensande Church, built of brick in 1924. Its roof structure and bell tower were completely renovated in 2008. These buildings, from different periods, offer further perspectives on the town's cultural heritage alongside the hunting lodge.
