Two kneeling lime trees stand in front of Biendorf Church and are considered a rare natural monument. The Early Gothic church was built from fieldstone and brick around the turn of the 14th century. Inside, this early structure is combined with later furnishings: the pulpit dates from the late Renaissance, in 1665, and there is also a very old baptismal font made of red granite, measuring about one metre in diameter. The construction period, materials and furnishings give the church several distinct historical points of interest.

Church and activities in Biendorf

The attractions in the village of Biendorf are also easy to distinguish from those elsewhere in the municipality. There is a creative nature playground and a toboggan hill here. Together with the church and the lime trees, they offer a range of different places to visit within the village: cultural and historical details on the one hand, and outdoor activities on the other.

Nature trails and experiences in the municipality

Beyond the village of Biendorf, visitors will find more destinations in the municipality’s other villages. The nature trail through the municipality is 20 kilometres long and includes themed stops in eight villages. Highly visible honeycomb-shaped signs guide visitors along the route through the landscape. Its length and the distribution of its stops show that this nature attraction extends across the municipality and is not limited to the centre of Biendorf.

Quiet roads and paths through fields, meadows and forests are ideal for cycling. A cycle tour through the municipality passes through the Baltic Sea coastal landscape, with its gently rolling terminal moraines. The municipality’s landscape is shaped above all by its proximity to the Baltic Sea, varied woodland and gently undulating terrain that stretches over a wide area. Excursions therefore include both routes across open spaces and stretches through wooded surroundings.

There is also a geocaching project in Biendorf and neighbouring municipalities in the Neubukow-Salzhaff administrative district, with seven routes. Marked stops on site, along with questions and puzzles about the region, offer a different way to explore the area than following a nature trail or taking a cycle tour. Horse-riding lessons for children are available in Wischuer. There, the Fit-Platz and exercise garden, with its equipment, offers gentle physical activity.

Manor houses and history in the villages

Historic buildings are also spread across several villages. Westenbrügge is home to a well-preserved manor estate with a newly renovated, 300-year-old manor house featuring a mezzanine floor. In the estate park, a 200-year-old avenue of lime trees planted in a cross shape stands near the 13th-century church. The Hellbach winds through Westenbrügge; in the past, it supplied water to the manor house’s moat.

Büttelkow is home to a renovated manor house set in a park with a small lake. The lake once surrounded an old moated castle. An art trail passes the manor house, which is also known as a “castle”, continues across the open fields and through the Waldsiedlung settlement, and then loops back. This combines a view of the building with a route through the landscape, rather than limiting the route to the manor house.

Another manor house stands in Gersdorf and is connected with the birth of the Prussian general Count von Moltke, who was born there. Visitors interested in buildings and their historical connections can set these sites alongside the municipality’s nature and activity offerings. The manor houses mentioned are in different villages, whereas the church and the kneeling lime trees are in Biendorf itself.
