BUK Lighthouse, the lagoon at Riedensee and Bastorf Manor Farm offer three different points of interest for a trip to Bastorf: a striking landmark, nature watching and farm attractions. When planning, it is worth checking the locations of these attractions carefully: Riedensee lies north of the municipality, while direct access to the Baltic Sea beach is in the district of Kägsdorf.

BUK Lighthouse and Riedensee

BUK Lighthouse is considered a landmark of the municipality of Bastorf and is over 100 years old. It is regarded as the highest lighthouse in Germany in terms of its topographic elevation; the tower itself is about 20.8 metres tall. These two figures describe different characteristics: the roughly 20.8 metres refer to the structure, while the superlative refers to its topographic location.

The Riedensee nature reserve lies north of the municipality of Bastorf. It is a Baltic Sea lagoon surrounded by reeds, with a natural connection to the sea that can change. Two observation platforms accessible from the beach are suitable for birdwatching. From them, you can look across the lake to the Kühlung and Bastorf Lighthouse. This lets you observe birds and take in the landscape beyond the lake from the same vantage point. As the platforms’ condition may change, it is best to check before your visit.

Bastorf Manor Farm as accommodation and farm complex

The restored manor farm complex now serves as a Baltic Sea country hotel and holiday farm. The estate includes two thatched barns, a main house and four outbuildings. If you are planning an overnight stay in Bastorf, you can check availability for your travel dates.

Children and adults can explore the manor farm’s own fruit and herb garden; there is also a children’s ranch. So, in addition to the retail offerings, the garden and ranch are among the activities described at the manor farm.

Farm products and refreshments

At Bastorf Manor Farm, the farm shop is housed in a restored, thatched three-aisled barn dating from 1820. Regional products and goods made on site are sold there. The fruit kitchen regularly makes jams and fruit spreads from regional fruit; availability is seasonal. The Mecklenburg Oil Mill at the manor farm produces cold-pressed sunflower, linseed and rapeseed oil from organic seeds. The oils are available to take away, but availability may change. The BonBon shop offers more than 40 varieties of fruit candy, including sugar-free varieties, as well as fruit gums and liquorice. The exact selection may vary.

Next to Bastorf Lighthouse, Café Valentins serves homemade cakes and hot sea buckthorn juice. As the menu may change, it is advisable to check the current selection before your visit.

Beach access and trails in the municipality

In the district of Kägsdorf, which belongs to the municipality of Bastorf, residents and visitors have direct access to the Baltic Sea beach. The Kühlung terminal moraine lies southeast of the municipality, with forest hiking and cycling trails. These are two different options to consider when planning your day: beach access in Kägsdorf and the trails at the Kühlung. You can decide whether to make the beach or the forest hiking and cycling trails the focus of your stay.
