Jördenstorf brings together the village church and its architectural history, the easy “In the Footsteps of the Windmills” cycling route, and the Peenehof Köppen fish farm as distinct topics. At the church, medieval building elements meet an organ dating from 1878; at Peenehof, fish farming and water supply are part of the facility’s profile. You can choose between architecture, cycling and fish farming. If you plan to visit Peenehof, check current visitor information in advance.
Jördenstorf Village Church: Architectural Features and Traces of Time
Construction of Jördenstorf Village Church probably began in the 13th century. As an important early building from the transition between Romanesque and Gothic styles, it combines a cautious date with an art-historical classification. The nave, chancel and west tower are particularly relevant for understanding its architecture: they differ in material, form and possible function.
The nave is built of brick and decorated with a round-arch frieze; the recessed, vaulted chancel was built of fieldstone. The chancel forms a counterpoint to the nave: in addition to the change in materials, its recessed position and vault also shape the layout. The square west tower completes the structure. It was probably built early on as a fortified tower; this function, too, should be interpreted with caution.
The medieval structure also includes the nave’s hall roof. It features unusually closely spaced roof trusses and sloping posts. Thus, alongside the layout of the nave, chancel and tower, the roof construction is another architectural point of reference. The FRIESE (III) organ dates from 1878 and adds a feature from a later period. A First World War memorial stands at the eastern entrance to the churchyard. The church site therefore brings together architectural history and a clearly located memorial.
Peenehof Köppen and the Nature Park
Peenehof Köppen is located at Klein Wüstenfelde 9a, 17168 Jördenstorf, on the edge of the Mecklenburg Switzerland and Lake Kummerow Nature Park. It has a fish farm supplied by springs whose water is collected in a large pond. Water supply, as well as fish farming, is therefore one of the facility’s defining features. If you include Peenehof in your plans, check current visitor information in advance.
Cycling Route Through Jördenstorf
The circular “In the Footsteps of the Windmills” route is rated easy and is 36.9 kilometres long. It passes through Jördenstorf and continues towards Poggelow and Stierow. Its distance makes the route a cycling highlight in its own right, alongside exploring the village church. As map details may change, it is advisable to check the current route before setting off.
The difference also lies in the scale of planning: the church is a single building with several architectural and historical points of reference; the cycling route is a 36.9-kilometre trail. This gives you a choice of distinct highlights in Jördenstorf: a focused cultural experience or a longer cycling activity.
