Those who choose Dahmen as a travel destination can combine time swimming in Lake Malchin with nature watching, cycling and a view of the village. The swimming area is on the south side of the lake; an observation tower in the Dahmer Wiesen offers views of the Dahmer Moorwiesen nature reserve and Lake Malchin. Other options include a cycling tour through Dahmen, a cycle path towards Ziddorf and an early Gothic brick church as a local attraction. The swimming area offers time by the water, while the tower combines views with seasonal wildlife watching; the cycling routes add another focus.
Swimming Area and Camping on Lake Malchin
The swimming area has a sandy shore that slopes gently into the water. A jetty and a partly shaded sunbathing lawn complement the swimming area; it is unguarded. This describes both the nature of the shore and the facilities available for spending time by the water.
There is a campsite at the swimming area. It covers 1.4 hectares, is surrounded by large trees and has 80 pitches. Boat rental is also available at the swimming area. Before travelling, check locally whether boat rental is available and which campsite details are current.
Observation Tower in the Dahmer Wiesen
The wooden observation tower is located in the Dahmer Wiesen on Lake Malchin. From there, you can see across the Dahmer Moorwiesen nature reserve and the lake. The tower has wooden benches and a table for a light meal. It can accommodate four to eight people and is considered an ideal spot for photography and wildlife watching.
From Dahmen, reach the tower by walking into the meadows behind the sports field. A standard passenger car can get as far as the tower; otherwise, plan for a walk of about 500 metres. Check access conditions before your visit.
From the tower, you can watch cranes, ospreys and white-tailed eagles. Sightings are seasonal and not guaranteed. Goosanders are also present as breeding birds. Even without seeing a particular animal, the tower offers its own reason to visit, with views of the lake and nature reserve and places to sit.
Cycling, Hiking and the Village
Tour A of Tour 09, “Castles and Churches Tour in the Mecklenburg Switzerland,” passes through Dahmen. An asphalted, well-signposted cycle path also runs from Dahmen towards Ziddorf. For three kilometres, it follows the lake and the Mühlenbach stream. The tour passes through the village; the route towards Ziddorf is a separate cycling section along the lake and the Mühlenbach. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Dahmen also offers opportunities to explore the surrounding countryside on foot. The German Avenue Road runs through Dahmen. The early Gothic brick church is one of the village’s attractions and, as a cultural destination, complements the water and nature themes with a glimpse into local history.
